Sequence III: Perdition - Chimera.

Neizbezhnost Raskayanie'.

So reads the elegant scripting engraved into the flat of her schiavona: the words that Coran D'zir can never be told; the phrase that is prolonged gibberish most of the world, and plain wisdom to its Dauntless population. It translates literally to 'A Regretful Necessity', but its meaning is far more complex than this: it describes a philosophy that describes the nature of inevitablity, the hatefulness of necessity, the regretfulness of both. It tangles the three concepts into a bleak whole that is far more than the sum of its parts, and it is in the spirit of this philosophy that she will one day take D'zir's life -- as he'd sworn her to do.

It's in the very same spirit that she'd sold her sword's services, years and continents ago. Illiterate, near innumerate -- having, in short, nothing else to offer -- she'd thrown herself into the market which existed for her only real skill. She hadn't been the only one, of course: in time they'd been a fine gang of murderers, she and Gallandry -- and Avi, and Maeghan and cunning Santiago -- and they'd weighed men's lives in terms of currency and threat.

In those two years, she'd learned more about flesh and its frailties than even a Dauntless childhood had prepared her for.

***

All men have their price, the saying goes. All acts have their cost, the universe counters, and perhaps that is why she she's approached at this very minute by these ghosts of misdeeds past. They are an offering, perhaps: slay them again; if taking their lives once pleased you, then satiate yourself a second time. They might feasibly be a condemnation: this is what you must suffer, when you murder a man not for passion's sake, not for hatred, not even for vengeance, but for nothing more noble, more humane than coin.

And not even very much of that.

Ermid Andreas, who'd guarded the gates of Gormonston, and hadn't the sense to step aside when they stormed them. Twenty guilder had bought your death, and now you advance as if you meant to reclaim them.

Howell Baern, who had taken liberties with a fop's favourite plaything, and paid for it with his life. Sixty to beat you senseless; sixty more to slit your throat afterwards, and now that sword in your hand is demanding a reckoning.

Iona Kelyn, whose cost was forty ryalin; Nestor Llyr for seventy, and thiry feet away, Agnieszka is screaming as if her heart were breaking; Kerrak is no less enflamed. These very real ghosts stand between her and them, and all the world demands to know if there's still a price for which these men must die --

Yes. For friendship. For the thirty feet of ground that separate them. Yes.

Now, as then, she marches upon them, a juggernaut clad in living, writhing steel. Now, as then, they engage in a flurry of blades, and these are fast battles, at least; let no-one say that she toyed with them. Her advance is with a shoulder leading and the knife lifted high; it devolves into a dashing lunge across the last few feet of ground, her stubby blade sliding across Kelyn's longsword with a squeal of metal and just enough force to push it inches aside.

And that's all the space in the world.

Down under that deflected blade, knife drawn back sharp to stab, lodging down through the armpit with force enough to drop him. A bludgeon catches her armoured spine and staggers her; she's on her knees when she grabs at Kelyn's sword, and on her feet when she's swinging it by the blade to catch Baern's bludgeon in the crossbar hilt. It's a tug-of-war that she cannot win, and Andreas is already nearing, and Llyr with him -- and this is no fairytale, understand; the heroes of such stories battle five men and emerge victorious -- hah, they massacre legions of them! In reality...

Two, she can take. Three, if the armour holds, and her luck as well. Four --

She frees the bludgeon, throws a fist for Baern's face instead; the first punch from that gauntlet knocks him staggering, but the second strips ribbons from his face. There is a chaotic tangle of bodies and weapons then; there is a pained shout that might be hers; there is blood -- oh, a great deal of that.

And when she emerges, it's with the sword forgotten, and bloodied silver trailing from her body as her furious fingers strip it away. Great handfuls are torn away with each step that she takes, so that by the time she's running, the stuff trails her in a thin, glittering stream. And oh, she is running, because the last thing she'd seen in that clutch of corpses was a glimpse of what had begun to climb from their eyes.

Curin

Postby Una » Sat Aug 12, 2006 4:44 am

Agnie was calling for aid against her and it made the woman's lips twist into a pleased smirk. Even as she rallied her... supporters Curin slipped further into the trees, the crimson auras trailing from her shoulders silently screaming out anger, remorse, fear, joy alternately and by turns. She pressed passed low-hanging branches, through thick undergrowth, roots threatening to twist her ankles, thorns to blind her eyes, but still sneers. Whatever this place was it was certainly not reality, and because of this Curin saw it as a place to play in ways she never did. There would be only the most vicious of toying now, violent in ways she had never shown. Her killing of Karol showed that. Truely the irony of the situation, the -reaction- to it, it fueled her malice and spurred her on to cause more strain, more trauma... and maybe she could prove to Agniezska how little she actually knew.

Finally she finds a place to her liking and slips into the deeper shadows, bloodied sword held readied. SHe hadn't gone too far, but she'd gone far enough, and if Agnie didn't desist in persuit, well, then there would be more fun for Curin and more tears for her.

Her head whirls.

Jozef wails.

Aeryn dead. Father dead. Jozef alive -- and none of this forest familiar. She is soaked with blood down one side and stands astride her father's corpse; and Bryce beside her, knife outstretched, offering his help.

This is a dream. This is reality.

"Come out," she screams -- stepping closer to the forest, forward, forward, forward, into the -- too forward, Ariane would say, but not as forward as she once had been -- beware, Curin, for these young eyes search the shadows, and they burn. You have slaughtered her father; she will slaughter you.

"She's hiding like a dog," the girl snarls.

Bryce

Postby Civet » Sun Aug 13, 2006 12:29 pm

Bryce follows after Agnie, his eyes tricking him as the strange blurring of the dream feathers the edge of his vision. Everytime he moves new things come into focus ahead of him and others slide away. He starts to feel that fear prickling his skin again, the shadows and strange colors suggesting that something bad could happen at any moment, and this is a nightmare. There are always unexpected suprises in nightmares. Any second the two of them are going to push between some bushes and Curin will be standing there in front of them, with Choss and Keres beside her, and probably a couple of drow and a swarm of bugs. It's how nightmares always go...

Curin

Postby Una » Sun Aug 13, 2006 2:52 pm

And the pair pressed passed the wooded edge of the clearing. Why stay there with so much death and blood? Because Curin wasn't there. Further in and further and Curin slipped away, back and around, unnaturally silent in this supernatural forest. Light steps on the balls of her feet take her closer, Agnie and Bryce concentrating too much on what their eyes told them. And as a jagged aura wept silently, bitterly, Curin reached out of the shadows and captured Bryce's arm, twisting it back, around, up, forcing him to drop his knife even as she trapped his arm in a painful lock. Twisting further, jerking the boy up on his toes she lays the point of her own knife against the flesh of his cheek, threatening. Of course Bryce couldn't prevent a startled noise, but it cut off soon enough when he felt the blade against his face.

"Girl, you should watch your back." And would Agnie turn and face her? Would she charge wrecklessly and skewer her companion? Would she hesitate and draw out the inevitable? Were this reality, not the twisted dreamscape that it was Bryce might have had a chance... but now his only hope was Agniezska... and if their positions were switched Curin would be feeling rather desperate. She had little concern of what the boy might do and only eager curiosity for Agnie. This would only end one way, how they got there simply details.

And when Curin finally did have Agnie's attention, the blade of the dagger would slide for a moment before piercing Bryce's eye. And he screamed, and soon enough so would Agnie.

Jirai

Postby Jirai » Mon Aug 14, 2006 1:07 am

There was nothing but the fight, a desperate need to kill and to kill again, to erase the memory of Biske falling on Suede, ripping and clawing out his vitals. Blood rolled down her arm, a crimson flow that hid the pale letters enscribed there - she hadn't even noticed them.

She no longer bothered with words, Kerrak's roars and shouts greeted with nothing but her hatred as the woman flicked another dagger into her hand, sliding back, away from the sheath, gaining a few precious moments for the next trick. Then - perhaps it was a sound, perhaps the odd sixth-sense of both predator and prey, but she was spinning around to see a stranger creeping up with a knife. That was plenty of provocation, for a stranger deserved no more or less than this insane man she had once, perhaps, respected. She threw that dagger at Tebrin, bloodied fingers immediately diving into a belt pouch, fumbling around for something.

As the Drowess spun and flung her blade at him, instinct took over and sent him spinning out of the way of the blade, though its tip grazed bronzed flesh along his right bicep, inscribing its insipid little crimson signature across his skin. He winced, immediately reconsidering his choice of opponents in this fray... maybe it would have been safer to attack Kerrak.

Nevertheless, reason did not seem to be Jirai's strong suit this evening... and thus, he was now committed to his opponent. Besides, it was only a dream, some distant part of him, far removed from his actual incarnation reasoned. It felt like a dream... a surreal, intense dream, but a dream nonetheless...

Closing the distance between himself and Jirai, Tebrin - in all his nude glory - maintains a respectable space between himself and the dark elf, an arm's length... his arm's length, not her's... from which to strike.

USE ME.

Fine. He did. Blade slices through the air, rending the open space between them, hurtling towards the drow's stomach, guided by white-knuckled grip from his left hand.

And soon enough, so would Agnie --

-- whose mind is addled by such death, a sword through an old pickpocket's throat, a knife in the gut of a commander -- and then *more* blood, this time spurting from Bryce's eyes, and his screams are knives in her soul, and his body between her and the goal she so desires, a scream of Bryce's name, a scream of regret, and then another wordless scream, one to catch the slavering attention of Curin --

-- and how far will you go, Agnieszka Kaczmarek?

And she will charge; Bryce is before her, but there is more than one way to kill a drunkard, especially one whose arms were taken up with the task of holding back a soon-eyeless healer; Agnieszka will dance to Curin's unprotected side, as quick as a dancer, and make an attack to Curin's side, intending on making her block the rapier-thrust; if she does, it's distraction enough, and she'll come in with the knife in her other hand, so viciously --

-- for she shall slaughter you --

Bryce

Postby Civet » Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:43 am

When he felt hands grabbing him from behind, his first thought was Choss.. ever a terror-inspiring foe lurking in the back of his mind. It was Curin though who twisted his arm painfully back to the point just shy of breaking. The manuever was a near mimic to the minotaurs though, and it made sense that such similarities existed. It didn't lessen the suprise of the pain any. Does a person usually feel pain in a nightmare? Fear, joy, panic.. certainly.. but pain? He's a bit suprised, but then, what if he just fell asleep on his arm. It would make sense.

He doesn't have long to consider the train of thought because the knife is raised up to his face threateningly, and while he still believes this all to be a dream, it's a small part of his brain that is holding that belief and the rest that's wrapped up in the frightening nightmare. She taunts Agnie and he doesn't dare struggle, the sharp steel so close that he can't even focus his gaze upon the tip. When she plunges the knife in it's the pain that makes him realize what happened, an agonizing lance that spears through his skull even as he squeezes his eyes closed in reflex. Did he scream? He isn't sure. He can feel the hot blood on his cheek and the only thing he can wonder is, why isn't he waking up??

His arm is still locked behind him and the pain is enough to keep him immobilized for the moment. With vision half what it used to be and everything so blurry, he can barely see Agnie turning around but he can feel Curin behind him and he struggles to clear his head and focus his thoughts.

There was a reason Curin prefered to goad her targets, and this was it. Drive them into unthinking rages and they were so easilly manipulated. As Agnie screamed and charged the former guardswoman jerked Bruce around to block the girl's thrust, so she could either stab him as she had her other companion, or she could abort her attack. Not only was she putting him in the way but she was shoving him at Agnie, either to slam into her or perhaps drop and knock her feet out from under her. And with that Curin darted away from Agnie's rapier-hand, unlimbering the bastard sword from its scabard as she moved, bloodied dagger still in her left fist. And the whole time she chuckled deep in her throat as the flickering auras screamed and cried their protest.

Agnieszka

Postby channe » Mon Aug 14, 2006 1:15 pm

And how far will you go, Agnieszka Kaczmarek?

Far enough that she is a small whirlwind, sacrificing control for efficacy; of course, such is not a conscious decision, but one informed by the spilling of blood precious to her. Drill after drill, and yet blood is the final exam -- the internship, so to speak, of terror, the proper application of lessons in practice, a pass/fail position -- for this is not a dream for little Agnie --

-- but there is no more time for these matters; her knife finds a home in Bryce's gut as he is thrust forward, and perhaps it is a mercy for him that this second deadly accident is quick -- a mercy for both, that he would know it to be truly Curin's fault for the split-second before he died, so he may speak well of Agnieszka in the court of the One God. But there is very little that can stand between the oldest Kaczmarek daughter and her desire, which is the dead heart of bastard-born Curin in her hand; a sobbed, whispered word of apology for Bryce before she casts his body aside like so much trash, dragging the bloodied knife from his body to move again towards the woman.

There would be time for mourning later.

Right now, however -- there is a child screaming his heartbreak in the background, a small boy who is supposed to be dead, and faces Curin, sword against sword, knife against knife -- and attacks, rapier towards Curin's sword-arm, knife ready to meet hers; this is the quick, terrible thrust of someone who has been practicing for this moment, someone who will indeed go far --

she will slaughter you --

Curin

Postby Una » Mon Aug 14, 2006 1:53 pm

This may have been Agnie's first pass/fail trial in combat, but it was a trial that Curin had been given countless time, more than she could remember, and every time she had passed. It is no fluke that the woman still lives, and perhaps no real mystery why she's as cruel as she is.

Agnie thrusts and Curin sidesteps, the broad sweep of her sword easilly, almost carelessly deflecting the rapier away from her. And that deflection also puts the girl's dagger hand behind her sword arm. Curin doesn't press the attack, simply deflects, evades, the whole while the smirk on her lips growing broader and broader.

"I see why you don't have any friends, girl." She comments, continuing to deflect Agnie's attacks. Circling, ever circling to let her wear herself down. "Better to kill them yourself then to let someone else do the dead." And was there approval in those dark eyes? Or was this simply more taunting? Regardless their effectless dance continues, Curin smirking, her aura's weeping, screaming, thrashing in rage. Occasionally Curin darts in with her knife, aiming hits at the girls arm, fingers, whatever came within careful range.

Perhaps Agnie's rage would taper out and incline her to start thinking about her attacks, or perhaps frustration combined with fatigue would leave the girl vulnerable to Curin. The woman was certainly being a conservative opponent, though, as well and being larger, more practiced, and most defineately posessing greater endurance. And then there was the fact that her weapon was twice the size of Agnie's own.

It was enough to make the Curin laugh, and she did, that deep chuckle resonating again from her throat as their dance circled on, the faint breeze tugging at Bryce's hair as he stared towards the sky with glazed eye.

Bryce

Postby Civet » Tue Aug 15, 2006 1:07 am

He was having a hard time orienting himself. His head was aching and everytime he tried to open his good eye the other stabbed agony through his nerves. He started to speak as Curin shoved him, "Agnie, don't let-" His words cut off abruptly as the dagger sank into his stomach, and he realized that it was -her- knife, not Curin's, with the whispered word that followed. All he could manage was a look of shock as she shoved him aside, and he staggered a few steps as he raised his hand to the wound, the hot sticky blood welling out.

It was startling to feel on his fingers. It's not that he's never felt blood before, but that it's his own life draining away is a new kind of terror. He thought there would have been more pain, and that's because he doesn't realize that shock is setting in, that the color is fading from his features at an alarming rate. "I can't help you-" And he collapsed to the ground, barely feeling the impact with the forest floor, "Agnie.. I can't.." Did he understand that Curin had put him in the path of the attack.. it seems he did.

Bryce -- forgive me, I can't -- I couldn't -- I need to kill her, and --

"I'm sorry," she calls, brokenly, to the dying man -- for despite her brave words and righteous anger in the wake of Jozef's death, the death of Bryce now is no comfort, and it sickens her --

-- but, the fight! Curin is far more worldly, a little faster, with endurance to be admired; but she is cold, and inexperienced Agnie is a slight whirlwind of absolute passion. This will hold her for a while; the two will whirl among the trees, no doubt giving and recieiving their share of blows -- Curin more than Agnie, for the broadsword is definitively not a rapier, and the woman is cruel as a definition, and Agnie's own blood would begin to appear under that pretty blue periwinkle shirt --

You are a monster --

Guili Maria N'Aralon's words in her head once again, echoing like court-accusations, and this time she is -- and then, she pivots, driving the knife up towards Curin's knife-hand as the other woman makes another attempt at the inside of her arm; the rapier takes a risky salvo for Curin's shoulder.

"I want you to die!" the farm-girl screams. "Leave me alone and die!"

The exchange of blows was certainly feeding Curin's amusement. Watching Agnie attack and attack and attack, practically in a frenzy, was what Curin most enjoyed, even as she received her own knicks and gashes. Aparently the woman hadn't fallen asleep in her chain shirt or else Agnie would have had even less hope.

With another lazy attack she aimed a slice at Agnie's arm, and as the girl moved to defend herself, launched an attack as well, Curin saw an opening she'd been waiting for. It was time to end this dance, as enjoyable as it was.
Dropping her knife and abborting the feint Curin draws up to her full height and uses both hands to swing the bastard sword into the inner thigh of Agnie's leading leg. The resultant crunch bespoke broken bone as well as sliced muscle. This left her open to the thrust, and while it didn't strike her shoulder, it did slip between her ribs high in her chest, blood blooming on the light grey fabric.

In unison the jagged, crimson auras flickering behind Curin began to laugh violently, ecstaticly, all in dead silence as their expressions matched Curin's own. Her jaws gapped in mirth, blood seeping from the corners of her mouth and stained her teeth.

Agnie staggered with the blow, wrenching the rapier from Curin's torso. With another sickening crunch the girl's leg gave out and dropped her to the ground. Curin herself slumped forward to her knees, blood flowing faster from her wound and dribbling down her jaw.

"I got the better part of this, girl," the ex-guard finally manages to choke out past the blood, shoulders still shaking with amusement. "Better to die than be a cripple." A laugh bubbled out of her throat, spilling even more blood as the trio of faces finally drifted away from her shoulders, released from her physical form.
