Orientation

Nightingale Dhrin

Postby Glenn » Fri Feb 22, 2013 6:07 am

May I keep her?

If not, I quite understand. You told me it was Dhrin who tried to convert you, not Renne. Still, I've only asked for two things in five years, you know, and the first was a fair trade.

Regardless, I stand by my earlier words and she knows as such.

You may not.

This is not vengence. I haf murdered his first child and I haf held his head that a girl might open his throat. That is enough. This is not Dhrin nor Wren.
This is what they have done and how it was began.

She gave to me that ring but it was hid inside a swon of folded paper.
She knew the meaning of that. She intended for it to be a statement.

You may not have her.
I haf made you a promise and I do not relinquish it.

Since I already have you, or at least your promise, I cannot have her.

That's hardly fair. But then, what is?

I will not immediately hire her to the Inquisitory then, no matter how much I would like to. If she engages me, I shall respond in kind. We still have to get to the truth of the matter of the rings. I shall not send the first letter, though. Of this I assure you.

Moreover, my words from before stand. You have special dispensation in the matter of the girl. If she had given me the whole truth before, I might have considered otherwise, depending on what that truth was. She did not. This letter will serve as proof enough, signed with the seal of my office, to protect you from any inquiry.

Glenn Burnie, on your return:

Assassins haf been dispached by the Sun King of Rodelle, in search of Aleksei.

Mikhail Rain, compatriote, has preseded in advance in order to warn him. Or else he is a wiling liar of some small talent. They
are loyalists of course, with their Bindings and e.t.c. Mikhail claims to be a member of some active insourjensy, as cautiously
as one would expect to the degree that Aleksei thinks him dead. We haf given this Mikhail a room at the Broken tavern and
a Constabulary guard will be posted there also for his escort he is assigned Tomias Eddington, a recent addition to the
Constabulary and surprisingly competent despite this. Further details regarding names capacities and e.t.c. haf been
provided to the Constabulary and Inquisitory, you will find a copy atached.

I lose more regard for fairness each time I see it done. I lose regard for justice as a pure concept.

I would ask you of Golben. But I think you know already what my thoughts on your construction there will be so
instead I would like to hear yours.

There come days that I read back through your letters. In referense, in remembrence. I read those which they kept from me when I was not my self (not realising, I think, for they hid my room entire), of which there are six and eighty and more yet, none of them ever sent to their intendeds. The diference has so little to do with langwidge.

There is no knowing what Calomel might have explained to you during your time from us, or even the degree to which he is informed. Much of what follows may be of little use to you, indeed I hope that it is all unecessary.

The Council

Which presently numbers we three, being Treadwell Berdini and myself.

Treadwell fills this position competuntly as he has in the past. His church such as it is has turned itself to answering the present famine with the supply of stock from its own storehouses, in general his is a stablising influence, which is kind to a Myrken very much in need of the stable and trustworthy. He has always been that.

Although I haf recently and deliberatly offended Berdini, he does not proof an obstruction. Of D'anclaude and Vanidor I cannot say; our conflagratory friend however keeps to his home and to his own company, in light of recent events you understand the necessity.

Agnieszka travels very soon to Thessilane, in pursuit of Aleksei from whom we haf not had word whatsoever in recent months. There is no keeping her from this I suspect, and I am not certain that it is right to try. In her place, as you know, I would and haf done the same. Still, I am not beyond the hypocrisy of This is but one part of her reasoning, of the rest I wil perhaps write later.

The Constabulary

During recent events there was created a 'Civil Constabulary', its purpose the enforcement of those laws proclaimed by the then-Vice-Governor. Its acomplishments are ilustrative.

The Civil's prime advantage was the element of surprise and to a lesser degree the presence of instiutional suport. Ill-trained, outnumbered and poorly managed, it could not haf prevailed for long even had we not aggressively re-taken Myrken streets from its grasp. Surprise was key; time was required for the Constabulary to distinguish between Civil agents and its own, time was required for the Myrken population to trust that what acusted them upon the street was not a Constabulary transformed but a secondary splinter organisation. At this point Support played a role, the Constabulary suspecting (correctly) the presense of agents hidden amongst their number and therefore practising particular caution, it being believed by then that the openly rebellious would suffer immediate sanctions.

I did not mean to write a history. It is simply We continue You must un

Your guard described what you had built as an equation. Balancing forces, puzle pieces fit seemlessly together to form a functioning whole. Improboble mathematics. Of all the Were one piece to slip and fail, he said, so too would the whole. I disl This was and remains true: that what you haf built, improboble though it might be, you haf built soundly. Each body suffered superfissal damage. Each body prevailed despite. Had we wholly lost any one of these ---- the Constabulary, the Militia, the Inquisitory ---- Myrken would not haf fallen to the Civil bodies. It would haf fallen into chaos and violence, to be resolved months later and at an enormous cost of both lives and trust, the old pattern of years of centuries repeated yet once more.

It did not.
Your numbers held.

Forgive me a sparsity of words. There are immediate concerns. I shall speak soon, in front of as many people have interest. I would ask that you do would not have interest that day. It is a last necessity and I would have you not be part of it. Obviously, I have little power in this decision and have probably doomed myself by saying anything at all when I could have easily enough chosen a time where you would be on some errand. I am still recovering my wits. After this, things will proceed differently.

For now, three questions:

Is Agnieszka in immediate or lingering danger for her actions, intentional or otherwise? Is she to be strung up if she doesn't leave now? Will she be strung up when she returns?

Does Berdini need to be removed immediately or can it wait until a more opportune time?

What threat is on our horizon other than that which we have created ourselves? I am currently blind to all that untouched by my design.

Agnieszka
was to be this day's letter. There is too much for a single sentunce or parigruff. Too much of it is May Or May Not Be.

I hope that you take my meaning, I want this to you immediatly and therefor this is rushed, clamsy when it most needs not to be.

The danger to Agnieszka is lingering, not immediate, else I would haf her secured under my direct care.
There were a rotayting guard assigned to her. Several became compromised, were replaced when it was discuvered.
She is considerably more mobile than she was one week ago.
She is presently housing with friends, not family. Such is her state of mind. It is not as dire as she believes. And as you know, belief manifests itself.

She missunderstands. This can be repaired. A gesture is required of her. A visible triumph.

Berdini
is a single member of a Council hostile towards him. He knows this. He knows the aggression is not pro-active. Wait for an opportune time whenever it might come.

Threats
My immediate concerns are mi not ins per
There is a word for concerns which are not "the big picture". Use that word now.

There is also a question of famine, un natural or no, I cannot say.
There is a question of Golben.
There are talking dogs and a minnytor. The dogs stand aright like children. The minnytor is a Constable.
There is no Ashfiend.

This Decision

Your guard once said some thing similar to me. He was correct. As are you.

What do you intend?

I would haf this answered. Please. I haf kept from Golben when it became clear that you were imprisoned there, knowing very well what you required of me, knowing very well Myrken's need at that time. I haf kept from Golben when they journeyed to fetch you from it though I might easily haf not, knowing that Myrken was yet a bleeding thing. I haf kept from your self and Cinnabar both when his missive reached me, reckoning it a kindness and practical besides and that my presense was almost surely more hurt than help during such moments.

I will haf this answered now.

I intend:

Nothing you will like.

Some things that you would say are within my purview. Some things that you would say are not.

There is a cult, but there is no Baie.
There is a cult, but there is no Dhrin.
There is a cult, but there is no Renne.
There is a cult and a Renne, but everyone knows Renne to be a victim, well-meaning.
There is a cult and a known victim Renne, but mired in confusion where no one knows what is true or what to think.

No one denies the cult. No one denies the damage. No one denies that they were manipulated by people they knew as friends and family. They resent it. They resent their kin's role in this. They resent their own role in this.

I have a Baie. I have a Dhrin, who is a victim and a Renne, who is even more so.

The public needs to know what they have.

You have seen a world where there is no value in loss. This is my loss and I hold the right to refuse that reality.

All that remains is the matter of Agnieszka and the following question: What do I fear more? What they can do to her or what she can do to herself?

Paper is no good for this. Consider that into your acounting.
What I like

I share your reckoning of this. Perhaps, perhaps not, your soloution.

I said of Agnieszka that a gesture is required, a demonstration. Telling is insufficient. Had I paraded Renne from door to door peddling his story. Had I stood him in Myrkentown's square and explained him to those who cared to listen. What might this have acumplished?

Do not forget that Renne's pardon was not earned, but bought. Bromn's. My own.

Resiting Renne's tale did not earn him his liberty. It did not even buy his liberty. Renne's history was but one part of a larger exchange, one piece amongst several and of those the foremost was a list of names upon which justice might be served. Myrken's interest, perhaps need, was vengeance and the very visible application of justice. Such as it was. Myrken would haf rather all four of us were stood upon the block.

At the least do not forget that one of those names was Dhrin's, that of he and Renne one was imprisoned so that the other might

Of course not, Ariane. This isn't about the truth at all. Renne's history bought one part of one thing. I have something else to offer to a very different audience. It's my untruth to tell though.

It was never that the truth was not suffishent. It was that there existed no telling which would haf be

I dislike it less than I might haf.

As to your question. There haf been attempts made, instanses of low cunning and largely inept. Catch claims that he has foiled one of these. Agnieszka of course will claim otherwise. He has long been a complication in her life and in her thoughts, a matter egsajerated of course by the recent events. He has been warned from her. She has been explained to him. You might say ...... "some progress". He is not an immediate threat to her.

I am not sure that I haf the words for this.

Agnieszka is lost. She is an empty fist. She is absent direction; seeing only defeat, what does direction matter to her? I said: in her place ---- Aleksei long absent ---- I would do as she intends to do. There is a distenction: for her this choice begins with the circumstances, not with Aleksei. He is exceedingly capable. She knows this. Razasan is not what her heart wants. She knows this. Aleksei is an escape for her, and Razasan for her family. Seeing only defeat what she wants for is Away. Outrayjd and hurt and justafiably so, she will turn her back upon what has sperned, and more completely than it has her.

Transformative belief. This is what she does to herself.

We are to speak this evening. Is there any thing you would haf said?
