A needed break; to return soon.

A needed break; to return soon.

The two Corporals, Robert Sullivan and Thomas Daniels, would receive letters of approval to taking charge of the Guard while he took a short leave of absence. In the letter he promises to return before the invading armies arrive, and that he has scheduled people to assist in the apprehension of Lucian and the demons.

He goes on to say this is not a sign of his cowardice, and hopes that it does not look as such. In the past two weeks, Alexander has lost much, and explains that after taking the life of one his closest companions, there is many things that demand his attention other than being right in the center of business for long periods of time.

He goes on to say that a man named Nash Bellevard will assist the two in anyway possible with demon-hunting, and that there surely would not be any delay to Alexander's return. A week at the most, possibly back by late Friday, early Saturday. Trusting that everything will be fine and in working order. There's no business left unattended; with the money received from N`Ylim and his Lord for his old estate, the healthy mound of shillings were placed in the Order of Straka's vault, to be used for their needs. Ariane Carnath-Emory was taking care of swordsman training, and there were others also assisting. It was assured, that things would be smooth.
I refuse to believe this is as good as it gets.

Flabbergasted Corporals

Postby Rattrap » Tue Apr 29, 2003 3:15 pm

Thomas looked at the letter. He looked away, brows furrowed with confusion, and then he looked back to it. Again, away, then back. An index pushed through his near-white blonde hair, scratching at his scalp. Hazel eyes squinted at the parchment, widened, and squinted again. Finally, he simply stuck with a look of amazement, eyes blinking too rapidly to be normal.

"...huh," would be Thomas' statement.

He'd stay like this for quite some time, leaned up against the wall just adjacent to where the guards received their letters. Finally, relief came, that in the form of good ol' Robert Sullivan.

"'Lo, Thomas. Whatcha look so amazed for? Did a family member die 'n leave yeh a fortune?"

Thomas would look at him blankly for a moment; then the subtle look of annoyance would catch on. But it all took a backseat to delivering Robert the message. Thomas waved him over, showing him the letter.

"Eh? Wha's this?"

"Why don't you read it, Robert?"

"...you and yer 'logic'."

Robert read the letter, the signs accentuated by the head movements the corporal made as he moved on from one line to the next.

"...well I'll be damned."

"I think we've just been put in charge."

"Yeh think? That's what the damned letter said!"

"What do you think of that?"

"Are ya kiddin'? C'mon, Tommy, we're at the top of the heap now! It's time teh celebrate!"

"t's temporary. Not only that, it means we'll have more work to do until the Captain gets back."

"...you and your logic."

Another guard walked in, looking around briefly before laying eyes on the two, against the wall as they were.

"Corporal Sullivan, Corporal Daniels - there's somebody here who wants to talk about employment."

Robert looked up from the letter, eyeing the other guard.
"He'll hafta talk to the captain. An' he ain't here at the moment."

"Right. You're acting as captain until he comes back," came the guard's reply.

"Oh...heh heh. Yer right. Well, let's go see who wants in, Thomas."

Thomas folded the parchment and tucked it back into his cubby, following his partner as he made his way through the Barracks.

"Corporal Sullivan. Corporal Daniels."

It was needless to say, a little bit disconcerting to have heard the news from the rumour mill that was rolling about the place, that the Captain had left Corporals in charge. It was high time that he had a word with the two men.

The Captain had put the two lieutenants in a difficult position, however. Kilborn had absolutely no problem with either Sullivan or Daniels. He was fairly confident he owed one of them four shillings in the poker game earlier this month.

"Might I have a word with you?" The senior officer inquired.

He'd already taken the liberty of sending off another to seek out Duvall. No doubt Kilborn's companion at arms would also like to have a little bit of a conversation with the Corporals. It was merely unfortunate that the Captain was not present. There was a few choice words that Lieutenant Kilborn had in mind for him as well.

For now though, a simple mental sigh, and a hope that the remaining guardsmen here could survive a week.

Lieutenant Kilborn, Lt. Duvall, Corporal Daniels, and Cpl. Sullivan had had a nice little meeting in the officers' lounge. There was an agreed mood of confusion about the four, and none of them seemed to have any idea why the captain had put the corporals in charge over the lieutenants. It didn't really make much sense, unless there was something the captain knew that they didn't. Which was quite possible, after all, but there wasn't a lot of information they could have imagined that would make that sort of difference.

Suffice to say, despite the awkward decision, the guards had agreed on letting the order stand for now, at least. The corporals would run the day to day activities, see people who normally saw the captain, and the like. The lieutenants would step in for any more long term decisions, such as employment in the Order of Straka - if such an occasion arose. Hopefully, things could hold together at least long enough for the captain to return...and explain.
