It was finally the darkness that persuaded her to sit with her fingers around the bars, removing several inches of stature with the curl of her back. Corporal Sullivan himself had escorted her to the cell of this new stonework prison; it promised a more secure stay, with rats better fed and visitors better watched.

The walls were grey avenues of rough plaster. There were no chains, and a single, long bench was against the back wall beneath the high window. She ground her fist to the base of her overturned gruel bowl, as though her first night was already wrought in the complications of escape - to dig through an impenetrable floor with a chipped shape of wood. Not only would the task be daunting, but she would give up after a moment of passionate frustration, which had the empty thing clattering across the floor.

The hollow sound cut through the silence; a one-eyed glance to the barred window captured a slice of starry sky. A dark, confused lock was bound around her wrist and tugged with mechanical insistence – mouth wide open against a bony knee, jaw-muscle working. If nothing else it kept her voice from sallying forth proclamations of her indignance, of the stench, of her rights and morality!

Some hour later she crawled through a shaft of dim and hectic radiance, and crumpled into a lump of mature hatred on the bench below the window. Light did little more than peer at her and pluck a brown lozenge from her trousers.

The bruised youth fell to her convicted sleep wondering over and over if Audmathus would save her from Pharris Tergor’s black mercy ...
The hue of dungeons and the scowl of night ...

Captain Thomas Daniels stood outside the cell, leaning against the opposite wall, arms crossed about his chest. He studied the woman in sleep, thoughts mulling over their last conversation. It was pretty clear to him now that what he had suspected was all true. What Quincy had said under his questions...simply misinformation. Except the part about Audmathus being dangerous.

Footsteps.

Thomas looked to his right, towards the source of the noises, finding Private Williams on her normal Gaol patrol. She saluted, he returned the gesture, and the private stalked off to the other corridors.

He had made sure they were ready for him, of course. He counted on the drow trying to break Quincy out; but they wouldn't let that happen. Would. Not. Every guard member in the Gaol was made aware, to even watch the shadows they stood by. It filled everyone with an uneasy, anxiety-stricken energy, but that's what they needed. On their toes, until their shifts end and another steps in...

Yes, they were prepared for Audmathus. Even an entrance not through the front door was noted and planned for; they were, in many respects, waiting for him to leap out of the shadows in varying corners. Guards had been informed to patrol with partners or with criss-crossing routes with another, so that no one would fall without another knowing it.

Come on, Audmathus. I know you can't resist going into the Lion's Den. Come 'resue' your prize.

Quincy would be moved, later when she was awake. In fact, she would be moved every other day or so; it would keep those lacking magical means from ever being sure of her location inside the building.

Thomas was ready for him.

It was just a little bit of a frown that Kilborn had on his features. There had to be a reason of course.

Afterall, one did not summarily shift the schedules of various guards around, increase the lighting by requisitioning more torches, and beyond that, a good number of the men in the gaol presently were still the guards that were under his own direct orders.

Which of course, was why he knew of this little detail. What hadn't quite added up yet though, was the paperwork.

Admittedly, catching and disposing of Audmathus was a singular event that he would definitely cater to. The man that'd killed three guards deserved nothing more than such a fate, particularly when disposing of three guards to write a message.

However, there was the fact that there was one prisoner who wasn't really a pirsoner being made a prisoner. No arrest report, no detail of crimes. Currently no time limint on the duration of the stay. All in all, he had to wonder about this particular event.

True enough, that there were numerous occassions in which a bar brawl brought about the arrest of a few individuals, and they sat in a cell overnight to mull over what they'd done. He'd had no problem with the first night of her stay. True, she was a Captain of the Guard, once upon a time, but she had gotten herself the label of a troublemaker.

So had Alexi Rose, and Kanashia. And *they* weren't in the gaol at all.

So in the end, it was a quiet effort on his part, to write up something for the Captain to overlook. Simply a request for clarity on what crimes Quincy happened to be accused of, or perhaps, if she was laying in wait voluntarily for Audmathus. In which case someone probably should alert the guards to, while not treating her any better, avoid using disrespect when dealing with her.

Lieutenant Kilborn's reply, written or spoken depending on the other man's availability, was simple and straight to the point:

"There's a good chance that Quincy Randall is under a type of mind control from the drow, Audmathus. I've already instructed the guards on duty to treat her with respect when dealing with her, keeping this case in mind.

If she is acting under her own will, she has a charge of attempted murder, another charge of the same possible, and one of resisting arrest.

I hope that answers everything sufficiently."

The response that he received did not, satisfy everything to his satisfaction in the end though truly.

Attempted murder? There weren't any written reports he'd come across, of who she was supposedly trying to kill off.

There was no qualm against accepting the resisting arrest. Of course, that was a lesser crime that could easily be bought off, let alone actually have time served in the gaol.

Captain Daniels

I do beg your pardon, however there isn't any record that I have of her attempting to murder anyone. You can understand my concern, for appropraite record keeping, based on the meetings we have been dealing with in terms of the council.

Who are we charging that Quincy has attempted to murder? Can we estabilsh intent to prove it was beyond a common assault charge?"

To Lieutenant Joshua Kilborn:

I can understand your concern, and I'm glad you're thinking critically. The intended victim was me, and the blow would've been fatal had I not avoided it.

The intent to kill was there, let me assure you.

As for the record keeping, I didn't want to write anything up on it until I was sure that the woman really was under a form of mind-control. So far, everything points that way - including my conversation with Quincy herself - although, not directly.

I believe, perhaps, after a conversation with some of the regulars of the Broken Dagger - specifically Ariane Carnath, I'll have a definite answer.
