The young man, a junior in the office, Mary’s wide-eyed replacement, had the unfortunate task of appearing instead of the redhead who had been summoned. He was meek, but obedient. It was no trouble for him to say that Genny was not at her mountain of books, under which there was surely a desk.
If the boy was hungry for a promotion and cared to investigate or the High Inquisitor himself wished to see where she was all they need do was look to the only open volume, laid splayed on what piece of the desk lay uncluttered. A ledger was left, its contents not entirely untrue. The last entry denoted a visit the Councilor Berdini, an appointment set just several hours away with no detail written in the comments line. A very plausible and even reputable cause for absence.
As for keeping her head down, she had certainly tried. Her correspondence had been careful, coded, or unsigned; but her hours of fieldwork nearly double what they had been before the Man in White came to power. So, it really became a matter of perspective or just how vicious the witch hunt had become.
