Fractures

Fractures

Postby Jirai » Sun Jan 06, 2013 10:34 am

It began small, as such things were wont to do. A chip in a glass, one that only grew when you were not looking, cracks spider webbing out from that one chip until the whole thing shattered.

A tiny little thing, scarcely to be noticed. Not to be noticed at all, had it been anyone else. How rough a tongue does Agnieszka have, after all? But when Rhaena Olwak, who has been nothing but sugar-sweetness and light for so long, snapped harshly at the woman pinning her hair up, it was shocking.

Of course, the next moment Rhaena was all concern and apologies, the incident smoothed over. Almost as if it had never happened.

Almost.

For the most part, Rhaena Olwak was well liked by the people of Myrken. She has done a lot for them - the school, of course, but the Foundation as well, her constant work to see that those in need received help. On top of it all there was her constant happiness, a subtle, unintended influence on those around her. Still, there were some people who took exception to the trader. Owen Wilkins was one of them.

"It be an insult to the One God is what it be!" The cooper proclaimed, a bit drunkenly, to his friends. "That our own governor be livin' in sin wi' that scaled harlot!" The talk continued in that manner for some time, all manner of sins laid at the feet of the the Governor's woman.

The next night, though, Owen Wilkens had an abrupt change of heart, waxing poetic about Rhaena Olwak's virtues and severely castigating any of his friends who dared to disagree.

The winter has faded, giving way to spring. As warmth creeps across the land, the hours of sunlight growing, it is time to tend to new things. There are seeds (carefully harvested and prepared) to be planted in readied soil, tended and nurtured by the gardener's hand. The gardener must be patient, though, in awaiting the sprouting of the seeds, must await the time when the seeds have found sufficient warmth in order to spread their roots and uncurl from the loam.

The seed had taken root and grown, successful beyond imagining. No, not that. Successful as planned, successful as it had to be. Perfect. This, however, was not the goal, not the end, not the intent.

It was practice.

Perfect practice, of course, which was exactly as it should be - for practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect. And with the perfection of one, another could be crafted, this one harder and more intricate by far.

It, too, would be perfect. It had to be.

She had hesitated. For a moment, she had wondered.

But then then man had spoken, and all it had taken was a few words to remind the woman of everything that mattered.

He knew her so well.

In the meetinghouse, in the Governor's office, the woman set pen to paper.

Rumors were funny things, spreading from mouth to mouth, spiraling out and changing as they went. Word to ear to mouth again, until they found exactly the right pair of ears. Or the wrong, as the case may be. And if they did not find either of those? Well, they died out. The rumors of a disagreement between the Governor and his lady were no different.

Save only that some rumors die more quickly than others.
