To Lose the Sky

To Lose the Sky

The day had began normally enough for the minute dragon. Ember busied herself gathering food for the cold times. She hunted, fished, and foraged. She smoked and cured her stores using her own dragon fire, but there was one food that did not occur in the wilds, human treats. Cookies, cakes, pies, the glorious powdery white joy that was sugar, and the sweetened pleasures called candy. Ember had been visiting the Broken Dagger to add some such treasures to her stockpiles.

She had not been to the Broken Dagger in at least a month. She was an empathic little beast and emotions at the tavern often yelled at her instincts to Stay Away. This is Not a Safe Place to Be. They were warnings she needed to heed more often. Warnings that reeked of feelings and powers that just soaked into the surroundings and reflected off the behaviors and memories of the folks who'd witnessed it. Ember had frankly, been terrified of coming back so long as those feels were in the air. But days and rains had done well to wash it away. Even so, it was a tentative little Ember who made an appearance at the inn.

She'd spotted Catch and went to comfort her addled friend. The man's mind may confuse her at times, but he never had a thought of harm in her presence. He was gentle and caring when she was around, as if a single stray thought would frighten her away. Catch was correct. These cues were Ember's guidance throughout her daily interactions. They helped her to sense who meant harm and who was a friend. Time and time again she'd been able to tell a gift of food for gift from a decoy to grab her up and stick her in a cage. Intent was everything to Ember. Which was why she was unprepared for the most unpredictable Feel of all. Insanity.

Actions that did not match thoughts. Minds that were blank. Minds that were filled with chaos and thinking thoughts that weren't. Ember couldn't think properly. Why was Catch attacking Miss Merciful? Catch just did it. There was no thinking. No impulse. It was just done. Her thoughts were a jumble of confusion and terror and she just could not think straight. Miss Merciful should have been terrified, should have ran away. But she stood strong and stoic, as unthinking as Catch. She couldn't think right. Usually after a few moments the shock wore off and Ember could tell her thoughts from those around her, but there were no thoughts. Only chaos and confusion. She couldn't blink away, and instead sought to run away, to fly away.

**bonk**

Windows were a stupid stupid thing were Ember's last thoughts before collapsing in a little heap on the sill.

Miss Merciful was fine, Catch the Scary Scared Man had fixed a wrong in her, but looked like he had killed the healer. Murrukh beat Catch to an unrecognizable pulp but still the addled man sought to see to Ember without a thought to himself. The kind Miss Merciful put the bitter smelling salve on her wing and splinted it. She was lucky to be around such knowledgeable humans, but even with all that help, the fact remained: she was grounded. Grounded and stuck in the room until she could fly once again. The wrong place at the wrong time. She lost the sky and all sense of freedom.

She only wanted some candy...
