The Meetinghouse runner comes to Cinnabar's residence with a letter, and a packet of items.

****

Mr. Calomel,

I appreciate your openness and cooperation in the matter of making Myrken Wood a better place to live.

Your first assignment, as we discussed, is to discover the child’s killer; also, to put together a list of those Myrkenlanders possibly involved with the Cult of the Baie. It is absolutely imperative to the safety of all that we catch these wanted killers and punish them to the fullest extent of the law as soon as possible. Please work with my guard, Rosamaria Ramirez, who is experienced in the ins and outs of Myrkentown until you get your legs under you.

You will also need to sign a Pledge of Loyalty, included here as an attachment; it simply binds you to pledge your political and personal loyalty only to the Governor of Myrken Wood and his sole orders for as long as you are employed in his Constabulary, barring any other citizenship or other request upon your desires, until your contract is terminated. This is, of course, standard practice for all those given the Governor’s full warrant, which will be given to you upon receipt of the Pledge.

We will discuss the establishment of the Constabulary upon your receipt and study of this material.

Sincerely,
Coriolanus Helstone
Governor

Once the pledge is signed, the messenger at the door will deliver the following information in the packet to Cinnabar:

Persons of Interest: Thessilane

Coran D'zir and the Channellers - Thessilaneans all, they have a natural talent for harnessing immense power. They can call fire from nowhere and crush whole towns with a thought. I am told that the price they pay for this talent is utter madness; it is a death sentence. They should be watched closely not only because of their power, but because they work for and pledge fealty to Duke Burel Tassnehoff of Thessilane. Two battling channelers leveled the town of Orvere a few years ago -- two.

Kerrak al'Nerun - the former Brotherhood Captain, al'Nerun was taken prisoner by the drow and his mind altered. He is now completely mad and may burn Myrkentown if not stopped.

Thessilaneans - in particular, Thessilanean foreign nationals and foreigners from other states should be watched as much as possible. Despite Duke Burel's overtures of friendship, he has been noted on many times operating in undercover ways within the borders of Myrken Wood, and such behavior, of course, is bothersome to this Government. Why would he have such a desire to keep quiet if he cared whether or not he knew what we were doing?

Ariane Carnath-Emory - is named a Baroness of Thessilane, even though she comes from New Dauntless. Although she has never proven herself to be anything less than a true friend to Myrken Wood, her ties are not to where she lives, but to her own allies, which is, considering her history, understandable yet unfortunate for us. Also, as a Baroness, she has some sworn fealty to Duke Burel. Miss Carnath-Emory has also been a consort of the former Governor Bromn, who has been noted in contact -- when he was slightly insane and thought he was a scholar from Derry -- with the Cult of the Baie. So, although we may count her warnings trustworthy, she must be kept at arm's length for now.

Persons of Interest: Other

Suede Roschen - the former Councilor of Agriculture was, like myself, kidnapped by the Drow. However, the man has never been completely trustworthy; he has a son with Jirai Auvryrahel, a relative of our dire enemy the Successor Faeryl Nulliira, and may or may not have been behind an attack upon my person a few months ago. He is known to be a major player in the Black Market, and thus would be a splendid ally -- if he can show himself to be trustworthy once again.

More People of Interest

Countess Aislinn of Calael-- blind and elven, she has a gift of forevision and has constantly used it in the service of Myrken Wood. Since she is now the betrothed of Count D'zir, a vassal of Duke Burel, a small bit of suspicion must be placed upon her.

Cambree Swinton -- She owns one of the prominent tearooms in town, and despite some of her activities I do not agree with, has been a source of mine for some time. I would get to know Mme. Swinton, if I were you.

Rosamaria Ramirez -- I don't think I need to describe her; you may trust her with your life.

Tasks.

1. Learn the identity of the child's murderer and inform the Governor.
2. Obtain the names of those involved with the Cult of the Baie, and detain them.
3. Learn if Thessilane moves against us; find and detain spies.
4. Find the truth behind these warnings of vampires.

Notes.

Thessilaneans and vampires have worked on integrating themselves into our country for a while; I am concerned that the Brotherhood will -- break its contract in some way, either because of their mercenary history or their loyalty to Thessilane. While I do not expect the Brotherhood plans anything more than the service we have contracted them to provide, something nags at me, and I have learned to trust my instincts.

Aeryn Karolinger and his lot are canny, intelligent men, and I would see that intelligence work for Myrken Wood instead of against it. Thessilane is a historically expansionist country and I would not see Myrken Wood fall under its heel -- nor the heel of filthy vampires. I would see that threat eradicated once we have the time.

The Grand Warrant is enclosed. A Grand Warrant has also been given to my aide, Miss Rameriz, who is recieving these materials as well. I have all faith in you both to your duties to the best of your ability.

Persons of Interest

Lamai Carver -- Kerrak al'Nerun's lover. She is reportedly attempting to subdue the man, but I don't know how much credence to give this claim. She is fiercely loyal to her own interests only; a quality which can be used to our advantage, of course.

Sonoriel -- Our new executioner. I don't quite know why they hired him, but he doesn't seem quite all there, from the tales I have been told by the scribes.

Altias Bromn -- A strange one, indeed, and not to be trusted; while he was honorable enough while serving on the Council, he has since undergone a number of experiences, including involvement somehow with the Cult of the Baie, that make me quite doubt his sanity after a recent talk with him. Miss Carnath-Emory puts too much trust in him, I think.
