The Raid

People of Myrken have short memories for those who've done them good and the longest memories in the world for those who've done them ill. It was not a fair place. Maybe it was not even a good place, but it was a close-knit place. People knew each other. They leaned upon each other in times of hardship and celebrated with one another in times of joy. And things got around, quickly, and the thing that got around most quickly of all? Well that would be gossip.

A glass shattered. A barmaid witnessed it and heard the strange claims that went with it. Some of those claims matched up with what she had seen herself over the last many months. She spoke with a friend who serves at another tavern. People began to nod their head in agreement. The word spread farther, like a web growing ever outwards. Sooner than not, it reached the ears of those who would investigate the information, who would corroborate it, who would act upon it. Except for, in this case, the information was already known and the action was already very much ready to go.

So it was that upon this warm, early summer, morning, Constables were on the move throughout Myrkentown. A warehouse was assaulted and materials were confiscated or destroyed. Taverns and restaurants were visited and certain goods were taken. In each case, the owners of these establishments were compensated for their trouble out of a special fund set aside for this sort of thing, whatever exactly "this thing" was. It was explained by constables who rather well enjoyed this show of authority and any rationale to legitimize it, whether they understood it fully or not, that sometimes harsh action had to be taken for the good of all, but that it should never get in the way of commerce and healthy business practices.

Shortly thereafter the posters were posted all about town and the young men with their booming voices began shouted the information written there upon to the gathering crowds.

The message was clear and simple. The sweet drink known as Chocolate was now a banned substance in Myrken. The supplies had been poisoned to create a dependence and ensure the continued purchase of the drink. This was done, the people were told, by the base villain with the largest financial stake in the supply of the drink, a man who was out for nothing more than profit and chaos, just like always, a repeat offender as it was. There was cold, hard evidence, indisputable evidence. Paper trails had been found. Aliases had been smashed through with proper investigation. People had come forward to admit their role in this heinous crime and the ringleader had been exposed. However, his name was held off to the very end of these speeches, to build anticipation, though people were already beginning to guess. These barkers knew how to work a crowd.

Until a new supply could be shipped in, one that was tested to be pure, no one would be allowed the drink. For most, this wasn't a problem. The drink was foreign and strange and went against the hardened Myrken palette. Moreover, if they were drinking chocolate, they weren't drinking spirits and really, what was the point of drinking anything if not to get drunk?

As for the man responsible for all of this? The Constables would accept any information upon him and his black-hearted accomplice, not just for this crime but for a number of others, including the basest of murders but a few months hence. He was the Drow-Swain, the great betrayer of Myrken, a man whom the community had put their trust in as a Councilor only to see that trust violated, a man so cowardly that he would fake his own death instead of facing responsibility for his actions.

Who then was this man, the man who had poisoned Myrken Wood, who had betrayed its people time and time again, and now once more?

The man, the barkers shouted out, was Suede Roschen. And thus, amidst the boos and catcalls from the hateful Myrken populace, the hunt was on.
