Unexpected Leave

Tue Jun 21, 2005 8:43 am

Hey, guys!

I just wanted to let you know that I'm writing this note from my computer at work. For some strange, odd reason, my computer just suddenly stopped letting me access my network -- I still have internet access, but my computer no longer connects. I think there might be something screwy in the network protocols. I dunno -- if you guys have any suggestions, please drop them on here and I'll see what I can do to fix it!

Otherwise, I'll be gone until I can get this thing fixed. ;/ Talk to you guys soon! BE GOOD!

I wish I could help, Rants, but most of my advice depends on having internet access to download tools for cleaning up your machine.

A few pointers:

Try restarting your computer in Safe Mode With Network, if you have that option. If you can browse the web in that mode, then some sort of spyware or virus has gotten onto your computer. Download Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button), Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/) and scan with both while still in safe mode. Also, try updating your virus protection and scanning with it in safe mode. If you have no virus protection, scan using HouseCall (http://housecall.antivirus.com/) with auto-clean enabled and then install AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/).

If you can't browse in safe mode, find someone who will loan you a USB memory stick (or buy one) and put those tools on it yourself. Or burn a CD with them. If this combination of tools and attempted remedies doesn't work, you should probably have a pro look at it.

Alright, I'd need to know what sort of router/network cards you're using, are you encrypted, did you manually assign an IP to your computer, and um.. basically anything else you can think of. Oh, and if you're getting an error of any sort, can you see the other computers on the network and simply not able to access the net, what sort of internet connection is this? Whew.. computers are finicky. It was much easier when you could kick the pc and it'd be all better. What? No one else ever tried that..? Hm.

Really though, I know a couple of things mostly because I got tired of stuff going wrong and having to bother friends constantly, and if that knowledge isn't enough.. I'd be more than happy to bother tech friends for you, Rance.

Awr, I feel loved!

Well, for a bit more info on the whole deal...

I have a Linksys Wireless-B Broadband router (but I don't use wireless.. it just has the capability. wires all the way!), and I honestly can't recall off the top of my head what kind've network card I have ... but here's the skinny on it all.

I don't have the option to start in Safe Mode with Network. The network is up and running and my internet access is fine (I'm always paying it usually two or three months in advance so I have the leeway in case my checks are screwy) because I can still use Xbox Live on both of my Xboxes.

I went into Command Prompt and did the IPCONFIG and saw that I'm getting no connection (obviously) because the IP was like, 164.256 or something like that, which means it's NOT WORKING! :D

So I tried to do an IPCONFIG / RENEW-ALL to get a response back from the router, and it never gives one. My friend Devin said that the router (I just updated the firmware on it, and after I did that was when it crapped out) simply didn't send out an IP Address to the computer, but to remedy that, I'm stuck!

God, I feel like such a fewl. :)

Maybe I'll get it fixed soon! Until then, I'll just savor in the juice that is Conker: Live and Reloaded. Miss ya guys!

Rance-

Check for link lights on your computer and on the router. You may have a bad ethernet cable, and that's a lot cheaper to fix than a bad router.

I don't know how XBOXes work because I've never networked one. But. Are you hooking them up inside your router, or are you taking out the router to hook up your XBOXes?

If you hook up the XBOX behind the router, and the XBOX gets a network address from the router, then the problem is not the router. It's most likely a network card or software problem on your computer.

If it does turn out to be the router, try unplugging the router's power and plugging it back in, then try to get an address on your computer. If that doesn't do it, perform a factory reset by finding the router's reset switch and holding it in for at least 10 seconds (while power is plugged in). (Routers vary on the factory reset procedure. I think 10 seconds is the right one for Linksys, but check the manual for your specific router.) That will clear out all of the stored settings in the device and replace them with the factory defaults.

If the factory reset still doesn't do it, try assigning your computer a static IP in the default address range. For Linksys, that should be 192.168.1.x, so make your computer 192.168.1.2, then try to get into your router configuration by browsing to http://192.168.1.1. Roll back the firmware to an earlier version, preferably the one that you just replaced, if you remember what it was.

I have a Linksys 4-port router and a separate wireless-B access point. They can be finicky after firmware upgrades, but the factory reset *should* take care of it.

Hey guys! I'm back ... I think! I think I got it working -- I'm at home online as we speak, so we'll see how long it goes for!

I had to reassign my computer separate IP addresses and crap like that.. I dunno. The tech support person from India helped me out.

So hi!!!
