Heroes arrive! Wheeee!

*Tready comes rushing onto the scene wearing a spandex red and green and yellow plaid SuperTready suit with a big purple "T" on the breast! Oh, and, err, yes, there *is* that hideous lime cape with the yellow horizontal stripes.*

In all of this one has to remember; Evil and good need to be somewhat even.
Without the evil there is not story lines, no plotting for revenge and so on.
Ive noticed, as the evil players die down, many things happen. less play, when they do<including myself> the stories seem...less interesting.
Everyone has good ideas, now the only thing is to put them together and make it work, its not the first time in the last 6 years the taven has slowed, and it wont be the last if the ideas keep comming and people are willing to change it as well as willing to rp.

Why is Myrken cursed?

Tue Jan 25, 2005 7:40 am

Maybe it's not that all this stuff happens to Myrken. Maybe stuff like this happens everywhere, but we just don't see it because 1) we aren't everywhere and 2) we're busy worrying about the stuff here.

And concerning a map: I give the idea a thumbs up. Make that two.
Actually, I'm requesting a map- no, begging for one.

Pleeeeaaase give us a map!

Well, there’s a lot to say about how the location and world around the Broken Dagger has evolved and changed over the years.

In the beginning (to hopefully set straight some of the ambiguity about the tavern) we never had a set… place for it. Or if we did, only the original founder knew it. And Sorn never quite imparted that information to the rest of us (or me anyway ;p). Others might have known, but for the majority, it was just a non-descript tavern out in the boonies.

A place where elves and ogres and dragons and drow and even the occasional human decided to take a hand in the events going on in the general area. That being said, it was much like channe there said the Silver Blade was. Chaos and insanity based around a place with more corners than it had walls (I always loved that) and more space in the rafters than there was floor space (this too).

But, thankfully, we grew more complex and… well. We grew up, I guess is the best way to put it. There were definite growing pains along the way, but we got to a bunch of people who cared enough to make it an actual world we resided within. And that, apparently, was the Amasynian Plateau of Trae Kelsa. Thank goodness for that, because it allowed for better avenues for expansion.

A better chance at “politics” to become viable as a plot, and a way to “get out” of the stuffy tavern as there were now places to go. Which was really, really nice. And I’m sure a great bunch of you already know that. ;p But, I still feel like it needs to be said.

Anyway. We’re on the topic of how to make it better, or how to recharge the game world so that it’s more interesting for both us old blue bloods, and the new that so desperately wants to be infused. And I think we’ve been on the right track, especially from what I’ve been reading so far.

So to start…

The Dagger was always by itself at the edge of town because, as far as I recall anyway (and sadly my memory of those ‘early days’ is lacking. sigh.) was because the Tavern itself was seen as a place of tumultuous events. Things occurred there that would never had occurred had it been set in the middle of town. The tavern had it’s own small blacksmithy, it’s own way of sustaining itself if cut off from the township itself (and it was never named for the first 2/3 years of operation). There was just the Dagger, sitting by itself out by the lake. And it was a place that freebooters and justice bringers and whatever could find and taunt and fight one another. So that’s why it’s always been by itself. I rather like the idea of the tavern being off to one side, as it fits the general… aura of the place. I don’t think the Dagger would have been the Dagger if it was set in the middle of a town.

There is a map, by the by. Not really of the town of Myrkenwood itself, but there’s the one that shows the province of Myrken and the surrounding. Maybe it just needs an update? (And it is a lovely little map too!)

Myrken’s been cursed because… well. It just is. ;p I mean, look at the name of the place. Hehe. I bet people thought the Black Forest in Germany was cursed (and who’s to say that it isn’t!)

I love the idea of getting the local politico’s more involved in the general running of the province, like channe said. It gives the place the more realistic edge that made it so fun to play in the last few years. But, as Lexinus said, it doesn’t make much sense for the rich and powerful to be there… Especially if they’re folk like Guiscard and O’Cyren. Hell, I even had trouble coming up with a reason for Burel to be in the place, and he had a
-room- in the place. However, the occasional appearance might make things move along better? Who knows what the sneaky Guiscard is doing, speaking with that lieutenant from the Order of Straka…

… And oddly, that’s where the brain decided to stop pumping out words. Ha, I love it. Anyway. What with the… well, detonation of certain parts of Thessilane as Lex said (and yes there will be a post about it in the Thessilane section of the forums, just give me a chance to write it!) I will be more able to spend some of my time here. I mean, I shouldn’t prod others to play when I’m being sluggardly about it, huh?

So, to that end, I think I’m going to announce that Kerrak will be making the rounds again. And he’s looking for a new job, if that makes anyone curious. For those of you who don’t know him, he’s Burels former Captain of the Companions (aka his Bodyguards) and with the culmination of events in Orvere… Well, he's got his pension for a few more years, but he's going to be rather bored...

WEll first i would like to say...that i have been trying to bring a storyline into Myrken moreso then the dagger itself..that isn't about any big bad..and that's the WS&L. a new establishment located inside Myrken. Khalika's business. its a boarding house for the more unsaviory characters and a cover for possible illegal stuff...theres a quite a few post on the form, and anyone who wants to bring a character in go for it!...the place already employees Curin, Sawyer, and Jirai....in one manner or another. And i have created a few characters to go along with it...Daphne-Kyle mainly. I'm hoping it will generate talk about the twon itself..and give reason for interaction.both on the boards and in the rooms. and I don't mean a seperate WS&L room...I mean off duty workers having a drink at the tavern..cuss hell who wants to drink where they work?
So...its there for all...as for the other SL going on...Nightmare sky...theres your outlet for evil. Its been said but needs to be said more..Awesome storyline...so Awesome..I pulled Morghan off the shelf to get involved...and have brought in a few others that will be making a bit more of a precence in that and a few other places....

so yeah..maybe i haven't realized the down time this place has been going through..cuss i've been super busy!!...I rp almost everynight!....and with posting and work...well i have no social life!...lol

as for maps and stuff...well i know we have a basic map...but i'm sure its a touch out dated and could be revised...maybe adding a few more townships or something to give people somewhere to come from..*shrugs*

though and this is purly naustalgia...I would hate to see the room setting chance..i love the tavern setting...i the unexpectedness of the fact that anyone at anytime can just pop in or drop in....

but yeah..my thoughts...now who wants a cheeto?

From out of left field.

First off, bravo Rance on the very good thread. Now, I'd like to toss in my ideas. If they are incorrect, flawed or unwelcome cause I am not a player here then apologies in advance.

1: Map - Excellent idea, Maps are rather hard and difficult but I feel with this you can actually start small. I've done a few maps myself, but I won't violate any rules by posting a URL to them on here. I'll only do so by specific request.

2: Why is this area a hotspot - This could be approached from a geographical spot. Maybe there is some specific mineral deposit under the land, maybe there is a tactical importance to the area. As for tactical reasons, let me introduce a three letter word which will make the small Tavern and area booming with all sorts of potential plots.

War

A War, if done right, with no real determined outcome, could provide a shakeup to give BD enough RP to shake a stick at for at least a year.

I have more ideas but I feel this is enough for now. Don't want to press my luck.

Tue Jan 25, 2005 7:09 pm

That's a very good point, Jody -- I don't necessarily think the setting around the inn is much subject to change.

I'm currently working on a map, with some artistic help from Katalin, that's giving more basic definition to the expansions of land beyond what we can see on the original map. I'll throw it up here, let you guys see what you like or dislike of it before it goes any further once it's semi-completed! It's just more or less a diarrhea of thoughts, but I'm hoping you guys like it, and everything that was once there, of course will always be there!
Suggestions about new lands and all will be welcome! Also, has it ever been decided what purpose Xanth Grange and the other undefined nations have? Those places are begging for story!

Talk to you guys soon! ^ ^ Be well!

Well, jeez, I don't want to blast anybody here, but, I don't think politics is the answer. And bear with me, I've only skimmed this thread loosely - it's late and I have an assignment to work on!

But anyway. I really think politics is not the answer. I know a lot of people enjoy this. But I've found in the past that a lot of people also don't - and it seems to segregate people. Injecting it in is fine, but it also feels sometimes like it seperates people. Often times the political characters are off doing their own thing, laying laws and fighting wars that never quite make it to the "other" people, or worse, have nothing to do with issues that feel important to the Dagger.

Er, not to say I think it's bad to have politics in the play. Again, I know a lot of people enjoy it and find it enriching - I'm not saying it shouldn't be there. I just don't think it's THE answer. I don't think working on setting or the website or anything like that is THE answer. Those are helpful, and they may contribute TO the answer.

But I think THE answer to the Dagger's "woes" of late is just. Play. People don't really play much. I know that's also THE problem, but, c'mon. Simplest answer. A lot of people sit around the OOC (me included!) going "I want to play." but they never do. Or worse, they just complain about the Dagger's dying. Or say "the Dagger's no fun anymore, who wants to play privately"?

I'm sorry, but if you want to "save" the Dagger, it's that simple: play in it. Take some character, or make some character, who you find just plain fun to play. Play with whoever's around. Don't try to schedule big events or work out long stories. Just play. Interact. Get the ball rolling.

The Dagger's like a sputtering engine now. It coughs to life, then wheezes and dies, because it doesn't have enough fuel - our play. Seriously, just play! I've been trying to do this more myself, lately, with Sawyer, and I've enjoyed it immensely just interacting aimlessly with whoever happens to want to do some role playing. Better yet, when you play for a while, other people go "Oo, people are playing!" and might just put down that hot game or stop watching TV or what have you to play a little too.

I'm very tired right now, have I mentioned that? I'm just raving incoherently I guess. But honest. This is the simplest solution. I think it's good that people want to do other things, like update the site (which it badly needs) and inject their storylines in. But this all needs to rest upon a framework of simple interaction between characters. Nothing is going to work unless there's role play to build it on.

Anyway. Uh. That's my cent and a half. Take me with a grain of salt.

My two cents

Wed Jan 26, 2005 11:32 am

Okay, I admit to skimming most of this post too, mainly because I feel that a lot of the suggestions were missing hte mark. The problem as I see it is that when we get new people in the Dagger who want to play, no one joind them.

So for this reason, I think, like what Bri was saying, we jsut need to play more. I know on occasion I've started playing with the random new person just because no one else was, and I feel better because, well, I tried.

And tied to that reason, I don't think it's a bad idea for people to jsut have characters that aren't involved in anything. It makes it really easy to start interacting with people when you can't say "Oh, well this character is tied up doing this, and this character has no reason to be there, yadda yadda." So make someone who has every reason in the world to do nothing but hang out in the Dagger. I have a few of em and I like to toss them in on occasion.

And tied to that in a different direction: I've noticed when new people bring in characters, they bring them in with plots for those characters. It doesn't matter if the plot is weak or if it's the best thing anyone's ever heard, but people should try to get involved in their plots, too, not just make plots for established characters to join, or badger your rp buddies to join in on an idea cause you like how they play. Mind you, I'm not saying you shouldn't or can't have those plots, just that we should try to include new folks as well, and, well, most of them that I've seen come with their own ways to be included.

And hopefully that was coherent. Yay if it was! =D

Wed Jan 26, 2005 4:09 pm

Well said you two...I agree whole-heartedly...play truly is the answer, but i've always felt that, and i think because i play with such a variety of yah all, is why i personally haven't noticed the slow down to much..I think also people tend to at times think because there is nothing major going on that the places is dying...there doesn't have to always be a Catastrophy looming over the head of Myrken for there to be action..its nice sometimes to have just day to day activities...allow the fantasy to simply be the background mixed lightly in daily life...

Also i was thinking today actually about the politcal landscape. and it dawned on me..so i figured i would lay this question for everyone.

How many out there have encounters with their politcal representive in their day to day life?..

I mean beisde the new reports and press confrences on the nightly news?

i know for sure the councilors in my city don't hang out at my local watering hole..in fact i don't think i have ever met someone in the politcal ring, save when my mother was on either town council or the school board.

So I've never thought it strange that there has been a large politcal presence, there around for sure.. but many in a offical sence. When something goes wrong they have a meeting discuss the situation through letters and such. but its highly unlikly to see a govenor sitting around in a dirty tavern tossing back ale with the peasants...

But like Bri said...some people like it or feel it needed more then others..i just wanted to inject what i was thinking about today at work...

anyways...can't wait to see the new map, and if possible could we include a few port cities....cuss well khal has ships and really no where to stick them.

till Phlynn voice breaks....make mine the BD!

My two coppers

Thu Jan 27, 2005 12:15 pm

I'm hopping in rather late, since I don't check the boards every day (like I want to!). Besides, now I don't have to post every other 'box' and say "Yea" or "Nae"!

What Khalika just said, is a good point...except! This isn't a city with a million, or even several thousand people. Maybe one thousand - there's more chance to be closer to the authority figures, when populations are smaller. Still, the point about rich people not wanting to go to the local bar is true, too. I dunno, either way works I suppose.

The thing I want to see on the site, is more currency stuff! People don't generally pay attention to that, but I'm weird and actually keep track of my character's money (not every single shilling, mind you, but I know their general status). For instance, BloodWing hasn't got a single coin to her name. Raziqa now has a job...and I'd like to know if she's making enough to barely squeak by, or if she can indulge in a few luxuries or have some to save up for later, or what! There's not even a price for the rooms in Dagger! Yes, we have the menu...and the website says how much it is to buy a bed and sheets for a house...but not how much rooms are at an Inn of any sort. I'm just curious about details like that.

Another oddity of mine... I don't particularly like plots - at least, not huge ones. I have a difficult enough time just remembering who my characters have met two weeks ago, let alone keep up with all the events in a storyline. I personally am quite content with playing the 'every day' stuff...which is usually what I do. When plots do happen, I usually just have my characters notice stuff, but not actually get involved. Whether or not that offends people who put effort into forming a detailed story, I'm not sure...but it's not that I don't appreciate it, I just can't keep up!

I think that's it, for me...

Fri Jan 28, 2005 10:34 am

Heee! I was a lot like that when I started, going "OMG! PLOTS! HIDE!" and stuck around to jsut doing my character stuff. I don't know if i got bored with it or if people jsut started talking about stuff that I really liked and wanted to be involved with, but, um, yeah. I like plots, though I tend to like smaller ones to HUGE ones, I must admit. I don't know, maybe I'm lying. In fact, don't listen to me. This never happened. <Jedi hand wave>

Concerning the Map

Mon Jan 31, 2005 7:33 pm

Alright, guys. Here's where I get castrated.

I want to make it very clear before you read on: What lies below IS NOT PERMANENT. It is NOT a definite! It is merely an OPTION! :) I just wanted to make that clear so that way you guys weren't like, "OMFG What's he doing?" So with that said...

Linked below is the potential outline for a new map. Right now, it is only laid out in borders and rivers and seas! There are no forests or mountains textured or colored in yet, nor has the coloring of the land or the water even been done yet. The only thing I did (and it is temporary .. they won't look like it on a final version if you guys even want one!) was put names on the land masses to make it clear what they were. Katalin deserves credit for the actual drawing and artistry of the map -- she's done a wonderful job so far, and I think it looks awesome.

As you'll notice when you click on it (http://www.vyral.com/dag1.jpg ... no, that's not shameless self promotion, that's just my only FTP account!), there has been some expansion done. There is a new land-mass to the left, and a series of islands beyond it, as well as some addition to the north. THIS IS ALL IMPROVISION! It's only ideas and possibilities, and I wanted to see what everyone thought of it at first. I've a description for Naria (pronounced "Nuh-Rye-Uh") and The Rambuild Strait already in my head, but the unlabelled masses (which can be changed, in size, shape, appearance, etc.) are up to anyone else to want to describe, if they desire! Also, I don't ever think that the Xanth Grange and Heath were ever really described on the original site, so people are more than welcome to offer up their possibilities to that, too.

What do you guys think? Do the ideas look like crap, or does what's here look like it can be modified or kept and worked into perfection? Do you guys even think we should make a new map, or should we just keep the old one and leave what's not charted up to everyone's imagination? Make your thoughts known! If you think we should keep it how it originally was, or is the widened expansion of the area alright by you? Mind you, none of what we've been familiar with for the years that the Dagger's been around will change a single bit! There's just more being added, which some people not even want, which is why this is just up for ideas as of yet!

I want to hear whether or not you guys think it should even be done before any more work is done -- and if you have any suggestions, desires, or ideas, bring'em up! :)

Be good, guys!

--Rance

Descriptions...

Mon Jan 31, 2005 7:45 pm

Also, it might be good if, while you guys think, you had an idea as to what's been added in and how it might be put to use if you guys thought it was alright to do. Below are my own personal descripsion for Naria and the Rambuild Strait -- like I said before, these are not definite! This is just brainstorming from my own writing and thought and will only stay if (once I can figure out how to make polls!) people think it's a good idea. Until then, it's thought-provoking diarrhea!

Naria
Naria is a thriving country to the west of Amasynia with a past thickly stained by the blood of war and struggle. Its current rule is one of tyranny under a Queen; a rather basic form of political governing than most council and representative-based countries. Naria’s presence is rather new on the maps of the Amasynian province - older parchments label it as ‘Einsland’, which was the human-appointed name of the land before it was taken back through force by the peoples who once ruled it. Before it was Einsland, it was a little-approached land of exotic fruits and creatures, mostly inhabited by a winged race of what have come to be known as faeries and nymphs, whose hierarchy was ancient and well-stationed. Resembling humans in shape and size except for their coloration and their wings, the faeries bred the land for their own uses and peacefully lived until The Attainment, an event of centuries past when human armies from the Amasynian Province invaded and occupied the country and promptly put it under their rule and newly named Einsland. The faeries were overrun without much difficulty and were enslaved, set to live out their lives in servitude. Two centuries after the country’s occupying, the slave population revolted and cut the humans of Einsland off from Amasynia, Myrken Wood, and the other countries, forcing them into a mass retreat off into the sea west of Einsland.
Since driving the humans away, the winged Narian race retook the government and brought Naria back to its former prosper under their watch, soon reclaiming peace with the adjacent nations. It now stands as one of the foremost processors of exotic trade and supply to the countries further inland.

The Rambuild Strait
A series of unexplored islands off of the coast of Naria and the Amasynian Province. There have never been any actual explorations or insights as to the actual geography of the lands themselves, and all assumptions of shape and mass have been estimated. The only views afforded of the Strait’s islands themselves have been from the distant decks of passing ships, whose accounts relay that the islands seem forever shrouded in sheets of storm, walls of fog, and bastions of weather. Rumor holds the fear of the Rambuild Strait in silently spoken words - tame stories have told of fleets of ships being shattered on their shores, or of exploratory teams finding themselves forever lost within the blinding fogs. One particular story speaks of a rogue fleet of private adventurers and entrepreneurs who had once gone to the Rambuild Strait as a voyage several vessels strong. The darker side of the tale recalls of a single returned ship, nearly destroyed and derelict, and those few returners stowed away upon it forever changed and insane. Some did not even know their own names; others were driven mad by the sights they had seen, and the horrors they’d supposedly envisioned while in the Strait. Those who survived long enough to become institutionalized were soon found dead without explanation. Formal histories speak of the fleet having experienced great discord from within, and for the cause of the deaths and loss of life being due to mutiny and inner turmoil. That, however, seems unlikely.
The tales are enough to keep people away from it,and several countries have already sanctioned and implemented laws against venturing to or around the Strait.
To this date, there are no accounts of the truth behind the Rambuild Strait. Whether the Rambuild Strait harbors great demons, terrible disease, or perhaps even the wrath of gods has never been discovered - most do not discern the stories as myth nor reality, and mostly because of its dark, unexplored nature, many simply try to forget that it even exists.
