Broken Dagger Forums Fund Drive!

Broken Dagger Forums Fund Drive!

Postby channe » Fri Oct 13, 2006 7:53 am

For about ten years now, players have been coming to #broken_dagger for fun, games, drama, craziness, drow, armageddon, romance, and just generally kicking ass.

Do you know that it costs somewhere in the vicinity of $80 a year to fund the forums license for the forums you are reading right now? Do you know that the founder often pays this sum out of his/her own pocket? Do you know that if we just had $160 we could pay for the forums outright and never, ever, ever have to pay for a blasted forum-related thing again?

Broken Dagger is, thanks to the generosity of its founders and a our kind webhost, a fairly cheap place to maintain. But it's not free. The Broken Dagger forums license is up on November 10th, and while we are still in the process of choosing a new founder, the Ops agreed a while ago to start up a one-time-only capital campaign fund drive to fund that once-and-for-all forums license, so that it may be ours for good.

I think $160 is doable, if we all chip in. After all, look at the stats -- dozens and dozens and dozens of people show up here. $160 is 16 players giving $10, or 30 players giving up one of your lattes this year and kicking $5 towards the cause. Maybe that's eight players being really generous and donating $20. $15, too -- it's one month of World of Warcraft, after all. $13 is one CD at Best Buy. $9 is two hours at the movie theater. Think of the entertainment value of #bd!

Either way, we're asking you to do what you can so Broken Dagger can go pretty much debt-free. I personally think years and years and hours of hours of fun times is worth it, for me. Then again, please do not feel that this is a requirement. Nobody's gonna ask about contributions, and it will all be anonymous.

So, if Broken Dagger has been something for you over the past few years -- if you've met friends here, if you've had a wildly good time at three a.m. slaughtering monsters or playing politics or just dying of the roflz, consider doing something for our awesome little community.

This is the process:

1) email bd.webslave@gmail.com with your pledge to commit to however much you feel you want to give. If you don't want to use e-mail, feel free to PM me, Channe, with your pledge. You don't even have to use your nickname if you don't want to. This will all be absolutely confidential. I'll be the one who tallies. IMPORTANT: Title your e-mail "PLEDGE" in caps, so the other people who access the account for web-reasons can avoid it. Deadline for this is October 25.
2) I will keep everybody updated on how much we have.
3) When we get to $160, I'll open up a Paypal account and give everyone about a week to contribute (deadline: November 6), and then that money will be transferred straight to the company who distributes the forums to pay for the license, which will be held by the current founder.
4) Anything over $160 will be used as a gift for our gracious webhost, who has hosted us for free for a number of years, and who just went above and beyond the call of duty to help us transfer the wiki, among other things.
5) If we do not get $160, we will consider asking you to contribute anyway, just so we can defray this cost.

If you have any questions at all, please comment here, PM, or otherwise let me know.

So far, we have pledges amounting to $55! That's amazing!

I encourage everyone to pledge whatever you can -- whether it's $2 or $20, it matters to Broken Dagger!

From what I understand -- it was before my time -- they tried, but they didn't get enough money and bought the yearly instead.
