Plot: Season of Dreams

Plot: Season of Dreams

Myrken Wood has had a history with dreams. Everybody dreams to some extent. Now, those dreams have started weaving themselves together in an elaborate tapestry, transporting sleeping minds to an alternate, all-too-real realm composed of the hopes, the fears, and the desires of those involved.

In these collective dreams, Myrken Wood is a city built of gold. People, trade, and politics prosper. Those who wake from the dream to the Myrken Wood of present day are left with the memories of occurrences on this sleeping plane. Each night they return to this alternative world where the strange, the wonderful, and the peculiar are commonplace. Perhaps some characters see them as prophetic dreams of the coming decade; others, however, may believe them visions to beware, a too-wonderful place awakened in the eye of the mind meant to blind, bewilder, and seduce.

THE PREMISE
Dreams have been a recurring motif in past storylines: the Chimera plots (Sequences I, II, and III) and the Storyteller’s Dream have been exciting ways by which to explore character development. We wanted an opportunity to 1) revisit the excitement of these experiences, 2) give every character and player an opportunity to take part in a flexible, collective storyline, and 3) allow players to explore potential futures (whether positive or negative) with their characters.

Generally, we wanted to give something for the characters to come together and talk about In the interest of developing further tension, conflict, and material. Characters may encounter people they’ve never met in these dreams; likewise, characters may find their relationships vastly changed in this sleeping world. The possibilities are entirely up to you. This plot is not timed nor does it have a definitive resolution in mind. Its continuation, growth, and eventual denouement is predicated entirely on player agency. How your character processes and interfaces with this alternative setting is your choice.

The Other forum will be the home for these dreams. Here, you may initiate dreams however you desire with anyone you wish -- have fun and create! Likewise, we’ll be establishing several large dreams that can (and should!) involve everyone with the intent to modify, and manipulate this Golden City however the play dictates.

HOW IT WORKS
From the moment you read this thread, please feel free to begin having your character dream with others! Be random and extemporaneous! Please label your threads clearly in the Other > Season of Dreams subforum. Additionally, there will be three Acts -- large dreams that everyone can take part in however they wish -- that permanently alter the Golden Cities landscape. These big dreams will not fall into the timeline until their completion, and how long they take is up to you! The idea has been designed to include you whether you’re extremely active or you only have limited amounts of time, and it also leaves plenty of room to opt out should you prefer.

GUIDELINES
    - Characters may remember the dreams they have when they wake;
    - Nothing that happens in the Golden Cities has any effect on the waking world -- yet;
    - If your character dies in a dream, they’re certainly able to be a part of others! Will their projections in subsequent dreams remember that they were killed? Are they oblivious? You decide;
    - We request that you explore possible futures or interpretations on your character with due control. There will be time for wild and crazy as time moves on, so being patient is your best bet;
    - When in doubt, ask. Talk to players and ops about ideas you have for smaller dreams and larger ones;
    - This will mostly be a forums-based roleplay, but side-channel play is entirely allowed;
and most importantly…

    - Have fun. Remember, the Golden Cities threads are there to fuel regular in-character interactions!

Some further explanations and elaborations which will hopefully be useful:

- The Golden City is a shared and persistent dream; characters can cross paths and encounter one another within the dream, and the events of one night's dreaming carry over to the next unless stated otherwise.

- Unless statedotherwise dreams on the forums take place on the night after they're posted. If you post stuff to a dream thread on Monday, it happens during Monday night's sleep and your character will remember it when they wake up on Tuesday morning.

- You can have your character active in as many threads at once as you like, but you remain responsible for any headaches that result from trying to work out how the timelines interact.

- Dream logic applies. Characters are not constrained by waking world limitations, but if they consciously try to do something too impossible they might jar themselves out of the dream unless they're experienced in lucid dreaming or similar tricks.

- If your character dies in the dream they wake up, or at least are out of the dream for that night, but can rejoin the next time they sleep.

- The Golden City thread sets the scene and gives a broad overview of the geography of Myrken the Golden, but this geography is flexible, mutable, and indeed should be regarded as provisional in the extreme. You are invited and encouraged to add further landmarks in the form of dream reflections of places important to your character in the waking world.

- Dreams are rarely literal. Play around with symbols and layers of meaning, have things happen which require interpretation or decoding once your character wakes. The Golden City is a vision of the future, and can thus be used to reflect your character's hopes, fears, anxieties and aspirations. Or maybe there are more immediate and pressing things preying upon your character's mind.

Above all, enjoy yourselves! And ask an Op if you have any questions or uncertainties about this plot or, well, anything within reason!
