The #Broken_Dagger Forum

Recently, it seems to be that the Dagger has been host to many new, still-learning roleplayers just trying to get their foot in the door to the plots and myriad characters we currently host here at the channel.

It is not just the job of the Operators, but of every single player to make these new friends comfortable and welcome here. Recently, I have noticed certain cases of dissention towards these new players and characters, and I wanted to be sure to remind everyone that, no matter, everyone and everybody with an interest to roleplay is cordially invited to the Broken Dagger.

There is no one player here who is any better than another, regardless of experience, ability, or origin. The number of written lines, the usage of grammar, the choice of allowed colors are all portions of play developed from style. People will play how they wish, whether they've been doing so for ten days, or ten years.

Let us all continue to be friendly towards new players. Let's answer what questions of theirs we can. Let's help them grow and thrive, since no one is ever exempt from doing so. Just as they might be learning for the first time, we're all learning too. Let's all make it a comfortable, warm place to welcome and greet them, and let's hope that they can have just as much as we've come to know from the Broken Dagger.

Let's be friends, tutors, students, and fellow players. It's the most enjoyable way. As everyone knows, "Respect for all is a must."

I have to say that I have been often welcomed in the Broken Dagger, despite the fact that I am not here very often.

That is far from the issue Rance. I'm not going to get into why the two people others have been making reference to are thought of as such. But really watch them play to see why. It has nothing to do with how much they type or grammar, or their general ability to RP.

And one of them has needlessly made a direct insult on my character IC to another for the sole purpose of making me less than chipper, therefore I have no reason to show any tact for them.

And I have no problem respecting anyone and happen to think everyone in our channel is a great person. Heck even when The_Diamond_Baron showed up I found him funny as whoohah from what I saw. But I shall not respect anyone who doesn't respect me, end of story.

Respect is the most important thing in this channel. Disrespect will not be tolerated...by anyone...for any reason.

I understand that there are and will forever be people who may not get along...but those people are still expected to be respectful toward one another. They don't have to be friends...but they must be civil.

Either way...remember that we were all new once...and as such, we should aspire to do our best to help those who fit that description.

I am of the firm belief that we all have to start somewhere, and that a new player deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive in a RP environment. With that said, I think that there are some ideological issues that need to be clarified.

If a new player or a not so new, but not so good player comes into the dagger and instigates a conflict, fights with one liners, is all powerful, etc... The player should be directed to the web site explaining the rules, or at a minimum explain that this is NOT a gaming system, there are no dice, and we do not add up XPs here.

The real problem begins when all of these things have been done and the person refuses to grasp what is plainly told or refuses to even glance at the page. A cantankerous character is one thing, but someone hell bent on instigating a fight for the sake of earning a few XPs is disruptive to the flow of RP in the room. I am not a big fan of kicking, ignoring, or banning... sometimes a little OOC harassment in a message window can go a long way. As for the OOC room, it was my understanding that the room was to be used to discuss OOC things that pertained to the IC room (as well as general BSing).

Where is the line drawn between being disrespectful and stating that a player is in need of some guidance, ignoring or a good arse kicking?

We all want to play, or we would not be here... from what I saw people were trying to play with the girl and she was dreadful and was content to remain dreadful. How do you gracefully get out of play with someone like that without being disrespectful?

I find this very true at times. However many have in this case tried to tell the ones in question of the rules in pm. Myself included. I was ignored apprently. I even offered to help learn the basic rules of BD. I was polite too oocly, yet again ignored. *shrugs* Some come into BD to do nothing but cause problems and that is when we need to let the ops handle such.

All I have to add is that I say cheers to the very first post.. more in the lines of reminding that roleplay isn't always about long lines and lengthy description. Everyone plays differently and everyone writes differently. Short and succinct can be just as effective as long and elaborate.
And though you may not wish to interact with everyone.. don't ignore those directly trying to get your attention either.
I used to find the Dagger a horridly hard place to play in.. but after comming back, I've found it much easier.. though many thanks to some certain people. I play a very bounce off others oriented character, which always made it deplorable to think of moving to new channels..
But with the new mindfulness I've found among the Dagger..
It's not such a fearful thought anymore.

the one-liners, as they've been dubbed, should also have the same amount of respect - and patience - as the longer posters have for them. oftentimes i see three or perhaps even four posts done before one is finished. i'm one of those people who has a great care for words & language, and i tend to make longer posts because it thrills me to. i do accept that shorter posts are just as efficient, and agree that sometimes streamlining something is best, but i think it also creates two levels of "reality" in RP - if you will ...


as for aeri's concern, and rance's original point: does it seem your place to be notifying ones of the rules, or is that the op's concern? dunno, it just seems that if i were one of those ones, i would be rather put-out at another patron "notifying" - just a thought, though. and i suppose it does matter what manner the "notification" was presented in. good bedside manner, wot, wot.
