Spelunking

Following a devil's quest was dangerous. Berdini knew that certainly, and yet despite his usual good judgement he was on a journey on his own, following notes that he had jotted down for himself from Shetani's directions. Normally he would have sent one of his followers, or at least brought an entourage with him, but something about that just seemed wrong today. She trusted him to find something that was hers, truly hers, and he was determined to find it without the prying eyes of others.

He imagined what his reward might be, what having her presence in his mind would be like exactly. It was a risk, a great one. But power never came without some degree of that, and it practically oozed from Shetani. Perhaps that was what made the creature so attractive. She didn't attempt to hide what she was, and what she could do. He could imagine a life travelling with a creature like that, killing for the sake of offering her another host. What fun they could have together.

He shook his head, shaking loose those ideas from his mind. One step at a time, careful and determined, just like all his schemes.

He arrived at the entrance of the cave and watched it's entrance for a moment. He was dressed differently today than any of the people in Myrken were used to seeing him. His clothing coarse and suited for enduring the sort of trials that the cave might put him through. He dressed like a dandy, but when it came down to it, there was far more to the Illusionist. He had built a life on creating things that weren't there. He had been his own engineer, and the muscles that were visible now beyond rolled up sleeves were usually so well hidden beneath the elegant shirts and dress coats. There was more to him than any of those idiotic people might ever imagine. It made him miss Altias, drawing from the memories of the other man's first realizations of his strength. How easily his lover had surrendered. Shetani would not give so sweetly, he was sure of that, but he anticipated how even an inch of surrender from her would be truly intoxicating.

He blinked again. He needed to stop thinking. Not knowing what waited for him within the cave he would need all his focus, and with new resolve he'd step into it's darkness.

The cave he entered was as black as the ever enigmatic Shetani's eyes. It was dank with a chill that soaked into the bones and there was the gentle sound of water dropping from the ceiling. An occasional drop might worm its way inside his collar. He could almost see her bewitching smile in his mind's eye at whatever discomfort he found there. There was a thick layer of wind-drifted silt upon the floor that had not been disturbed in years. Clearly, no one had stepped foot within these natural walls for quite some time. The path leading inside was a relatively massive one. The expanse was easily big enough to fit a small battalion of troops comfortably. A few short steps inside, it became almost impossible to see anything. Even his hand, if held before his face, was cast in shadow. Sodden darkness pressed against him as if it were physical weight.

If he managed to light a torch, he would note just how far the cave extended. The light it cast could not permeate the full expanse from where he stood. From what little he could see in the dim, flickering light, there were scorched marks upon the walls and thick ridges carved into the rock of the floor. There was something that reflected at the far end of the cavity as he swept his torch to gain insight, it was temptation to slip further inside.

Should he wander thus, he would find a brilliant red gem, half-buried in the earth. It would take him time to painstakingly extract it from the bed it made itself. The demon's coveted possession. Dare he take it?

The cold, dank emptiness of the cave stirred memories as he entered the cave. Years as a child spent huddled in similar shelters from Myrken's cold winters. Oh it was true that he was only recently arrived in the town, but that didn't mean that he hadn't had his beginnings in this gods forsaken town. People thought that monsters were attracted to Myrken Wood, but the truth is it's the town that makes them that way. Every creature of darkness has it's beginnings after all.

He paused in the darkness to remove a pack from his back, kneeling in that silt that no foot had tread upon in years. A fire would be sparked in a small lantern, drawing an orange glow to the cave, and for a moment he would watch as the light danced about the muddy colored walls that surrounded him.

He regarded the scorch marks and ridges with a look of curiousity before a little glimmer caught his eye and drew his attention, carefully treading near it, as if suspecting a trap. When finally he was close enough to discern that it was a jewel in the ground he'd drop to one knee and remove a little trowel and a brush and began work, as careful as an archeologist in his efforts to remove the little item from the ground. This must have been the item that Shetani had mentioned, and while it was intriguing it was far different than what he had expected.

It was what he found underneath the gem that seemed the more likely object. Glittering ebony upon a delicate chain.

He turned the object over in his hand. A necklace it seemed to be, the chain so delicate, but with a strange looking object dangling from it's end. He ran his finger across the hard surface of it and wondered for a moment before he closed his fist around the necklace as a whole. The lantern would be set down momentarily, and a cloth retrieved from him pack. This was precious to Shetani and he would treat it as such. He wrapped the necklace in the cloth and tucked the whole thing into his breast pocket where it could not go missing. Then, with that matter settled he gathered up his things and went to leave the cave.

It was one slow step on his journey, and he looked forward to many more.
