Appearance
You can tell that he did his best to blend in. A lot of what he wears, a lot of his appearance, does not look out of place. I have no questions that this is entirely his intent. At first glance he looks like any townsman, be he from the docks or the surrounding countryside. An average height, perhaps a little taller, but well within accepted ranges. Well-muscled with work, like a farmer or stevedore, and in fact this is what he told me he had been doing, paying for his passage about the Yards by means of ship-work when he wished to move docks. His hair is an odd sort of peppered red, and likely had been much brighter in his youth, before age had tempered it some; what beard he had was kept trimmed and sparse and was far more grey and white than colored. His skin is rough, darkened by the sun, but even so I got the impression that he would be several shades paler than most were he not at such hard work. His eyes are dark, so dark as to be almost black.

There are other things about him that caught my eye - or, rather, my ear - but his dress, though correct, is not entirely on the mark. I first met him on a unreasonably hot, summer's evening, in a crowded pub down on one of the docks. He wore no shoes, standing bare-footed in the rushes. Later, he reassured me that his shoes were quite safe, tucked out of sight near the grunged foyer under a multitude of coats. And though his own coat hung on the racks there, he still wore a fringed scarf around his neck. Neither had he removed his hat, a round and small-brimmed affair he called a bombin.

Background
What had initially attracted my attention was his accent. It was like nothing I had ever heard before, a sort of pastiche of harbor-slang and the accents of languages I recognized and some I did not.
Origins
The founding and establishment of the ancient Pelagic Stretch is a matter of debate among scholars. The natives all have many fanciful stories and myths of their own creation, or how they came to dwell scattered upon the islands, yet actual historical facts or writings do not seem to exist. The only constant between these varying tales is this: they were either banished, driven, or fled some great catastrophe that had befallen their original land.

Pre-Contact
With almost each island claimed by a particular set of Pelagine, constant conflict was inevitable. Small wars broke out over everything from fishing territories to resources to religious differences. One particularly amusing tale details the Pig War, which began when a pregnant sow swam from one island to the next to give birth, and the fight broke out over who owned the offspring. The fighting, as well as the limited resources, left the Pelagines only a little above tribal status for much of it's history. Occasionally, visionary warlords would bring ten, even twenty islands under their sway, but they quickly would revert upon the men's deaths.
Travel
Climate
The climate of each island is as individual as the natives themselves. Southern islands turn to the rain-forest, whether deciduous or jungle, while northern islands tend to towering, and actually contain snow on their higher elevations. All islands receive abundant rain or snow, and the summer often brings mighty winds and terrible storms that are said to uproot trees and good brick houses, and fling them into the towering waves of the sea.
History

Wild Magic
Known to only a few scattered settlements in the Northern Sikasoons, those who follow the Wildling Way are hard to count or quantify. They move constantly, save for a few herb-witches and hedgewizards who find permanent settlements on the edges of villages. They die, usually alone, and new ones are made to replace them. While every huntsman and forester does his or her best to keep nature's balance, knowing that nature is where they draw their livelihoods, the Wildlings are the embodiment of that balance.

It is a following of feelings, of Prices. A young Wildling typically finds a singular Book among his or her possessions. The Book is unremarkable, of faded, yellowed pages and bound in tough, old leather. The script within is written in a neat, cramped style. From the Book a Wildling learns how to tap his potentials, and - though they are not mages, as such - it is a kind of energy, or magic, that they gain.

From this point on, they are seekers and actors of Balance. They ask a boon of the Magic, and the Magic gives itself to them, and always, there is a Price. The Price could be as simple as moving a badger's sett so that her kits do not become flooded by the rains, or comforting a girl who has lost a favored pet. It could be as complicated as being in a certain place at a certain time, or the murder of a certain, seemingly-innocent person. It could even ask for the Wildling's life to be given in a certain way.

Despite the randomness, and questionable morality, of the Wildling Way, it does appear to act in the best interests of the humans that wield it. When looked at from a long-term perspective, it has ever acted for the good of the many, somehow juggling the needs of Humanity with the needs of the Natural in a fiendishly complicated game.

Esloane: /* Mining */

Through use of plow, hoe, shovel, and pick, those not content with scrounging for a living, or stinking of water and fish, have carved themselves an admirable place from mountain and wood to ply their crafts. Through their efforts, Myrken Wood is kept clothed, fed, and reasonably independent from other provinces in the Kingdom.

Crops
It is a struggle to maintain farmland, even once it has been wrested from the arms of a jealous forest. Nevertheless, with axe and fire, and long, hard hours, the centuries of decay, mild summers, and ample rainfall of Myrken Wood create prime growing conditions. Wheat is a major staple, with rice close behind it, grown in the soggy marshes of Geilston, near Ghreu Fenn, and Fitchton and Dunby to the south. Melons, squash, pumpkins, and roots do particularly well in the river valleys and slopes, with corn, tomatoes, and cabbage more popularly grown around Myrkentown proper, where they can be shipped quickly - or eaten - to avoid spoilage. Almost every industrious citizen has their own little garden or claimed patch of land to supplement them.

Husbandry
With Myrken's forests and a relative lack of open places, Myrken's beastholders as a rule tend to shy away from large, heavily-reliant cattle, save for small herds of dairy cows, and pockets of fattening calves meant for slaughter. Instead, they focus more on hardier, independent stock, able to care for themselves.

*Sheep are popular on the uplands and moors, their fleece noted for thickness and ease of weaving.
*Down in the valleys and towns, chickens, pigs, and goats are easy to keep and feed on tablescraps. Particularly noted is a native goat breed known collectively as the Large Myrken White, who's propensity for twins, heavy-fatted milk, and cleverness has made it a target for further breeding and export.
*The average peasant typically keeps a chicken or squab or two, who may wander away and feed themselves at no cost to their owner.
*Beekeeping is rarely done anywhere save around Myrkentown herself.

Mining
To the west lie the Silver Mountains, and to the east lie the Sikasoon Mountains, which trails down to form the border between Myrken Wood and Derry, and between them they provide much of the metals that helps fuel Myrken Wood's industry and exports.

Silver Mountains
The rich silver mines that originally brought people to Myrken Wood have, for the large part, been long played out. That does not stop rumors of further veins and lodes that continue to lure many to their deaths in the deep canyons and on the snow-frosted peaks. Fueling these rumors are carelessly-traded gems from the elves at Erlkynwold of such size and purity as to be worth their weight in gold, yet the elves treat them as mere cast-offs. The few who survive the mountains' hazards become furtive, secretive, and paranoid, yet always have a bag or three of cautiously-packed raw gems and precious metals to trade before scurrying back to their hidden, jealously-guarded claims.

*Silver
*Copper, Gold, and Electrum, in smaller quantities
*Diamond
*Topaz
*Obsidian
*Peridot
*Emerald
*Arsenic and mercury

Sikasoon Mountains
Long known and respected as the mountainous realm of various dwarves, their long and lingering decline and tendency to introspection and aloofness have sent men carefully exploring these imposing mountain ranges. That is not to say that dwarves are still not in presence; they have a long-standing, if tentative, friendship with the province of Derry, and Derry is often gifted with mechanical wonders and advancements from their allies that is many times beyond her neighbors, such as steel weapons. Much of the old dwarf strongholds, however, now lie empty, and their mines lie empty with them.
Those who are less adventurous, or bold, settle instead for the many iron or coal mines that lay along the Sikasoon foothills. Myrken Wood's Wheldale and Ashwood house miners who toil in the Iron Mountains, a small offshoot of the Sikasoons, and their labors are taken to Minehead to be smithed and smelted. From there raw ingots are shipped, or the many who reside in Minehead as tinkers and blacksmiths further refine the metal into the various, and essential, tools needed for every-day life. That's not to say that even the iron and coal mines are devoid of more precious materials, as shaft offshoots, guarded well by hired men, attest to.

*Iron
*Coal
*Opal
*Turquoise
*Garnet
*Jade
*Lapis Lazuli
*Pyrite
*Shale for building, and - sometimes - fossils for curious historians.
*Earth-pitch, Earth-tar, or naphtha, as it is known by the dwarves.

Waterways is the blanket term encompassing the activities that rely on Myrken Wood's rivers, streams and lakes. These include Fishing, Shipping, and Travel. In Myrken Wood, there are four major rivers - the West Mavoiir, East Mavoiir, Posehabnak and Sagpa Rivers - and three major lakes - Silver Lake, Tewllyn Lake, and Lake Mavoiir. Due to this, Waterway work is always in demand, and much of Myrken Wood's shipping is done by river, with Myrkentown itself being situated on the shore of Silver Lake.

Fishing
Anyone with the time, inclination, and a line or trap may catch a fish or two for supper. Most of Myrken Wood's fisheries are situated on the shores of the region's lakes: Shawburn on Tewllyn Lake, Myrkentown on Silver Lake, and Quagside on the tidal estuary of the Posehabnak River, which ships its catch upstream to Foggy Bottom to be pickled, packaged, and taken to market. There are also various industrious individuals that fish all along the rivers and streams for rarer catches and roe. Foggy Bottom, at spring and at fall, becomes an attraction with the running of sturgeon and salmon, with workers migrating upriver in order to have a chance to make some quick coin.

Transportation
Myrken Wood's roads are of variable quality - while effort is made to keep main thoroughfares like the North Passage Down traversable, maintenance of secondary roads most often falls to those who rely upon these routes for their livelihoods - woodsmen, farmers, herders and the like. Many of these roads are thus deeply rutted and often impassably muddy for part of the year. Fortunately Myrken Wood's rivers and lakes provide a faster, more reliable and more comfortable means of transporting passengers and cargo throughout the province. Settlements along Myrken's waterways rely upon river traffic for a good part of their economy. Teams of horses and oxen (or sometimes even local youths) wait at outposts along most major waterways to haul vessels upstream for a fee. Meanwhile Myrkentown's location on the shore of Silver Lake has established the it as the region's main interchange between road and river traffic.

*Ostmere, Erlkynwold, and Lindock lie along the West Mavoiir River, and are the major shipping outposts between Myrken Wood and Amasynia. Erlkynwold, though almost unreachable by overland routes, serves as an important trading post between Myrkentown's merchants and the inhabitants of the elven enclave deep in the Western Woods.
*Many more small settlements provide similar storage, hauling, and travel services along the banks of the Posehabnak River.

That which does not come from Myrken's waters comes from her forests, with many a man or woman pulling their fortunes from the dense undergrowth and towering trees.

Hunting
Save for a few properties, where the rich have bought the land and maintain their beasts for hobby-hunting, a large part of Myrken Wood is both untamed and unregulated in terms of beasts. Her forests are rich with much game, from black bear to squirrels. Deer, elk, and moose are regularly hunted, though any fine cuts of meat, from any animal, are saved to be sold in village and town, packed on mountain snow. Pelts, teeth, claws, scales, and fine feathers for ornamentation are always in demand. There are strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries in-season, mushrooms, herbs, and flowers, walnuts, hazelnuts, acorns, pecans, and numerous other nuts, and wild roots and vegetation. Any number of these are always in high demand from professionals, such as Confectioners, Cooks, Perfume-makers, apothecaries, and dye-makers, and even the average Myrkener keeps a sharp eye out for anything to add to the evening meal.

Charcoal Burners
When coal and green wood is impractical or expensive, charcoal is the alternative, with much of the population relying on such fuel. A good portion of the industry is performed in the East Weald to avoid angering Myrken's elvish neighbors in the west, and is centered around the outpost of Charvale. From Charvale's great stoves charcoal is hauled down to the River, to be shipped up- or down-stream, wherever it might be needed.

Lumber
With such an abundance and selection of hardwoods and softwoods, it is not uncommon to see great logs, hewn and stripped of their branches, being skillfully maneuvered through river and lake to be sent to other parts of the kingdom. Though Myrken Wood enjoys some amateur wood-work and artistry, for the most part her woods are exported to other, more artistic places, to be carved into tables, chairs, idols, and other goods.

*Many more small settlements provide similar storage, hauling, and travel services along the banks of the Posehabnak.

Waterways is a blanket term for the various industries that rely on Myrkenwood's rivers, streams, and lakes. These include Fishing, Shipping, and Travel. In Myrkenwood, there are four major rivers - the West Mavoiir, the East Mavoiir, the Posehabnak, and the Sagpa - and three major lakes - Silver Lake, Tewellyn Lake, and part of the Mavoiir Lake. Due to this, Waterway work is always in demand, and much of Myrkenwood's shipping is done by river, with Myrkentown itself being situated partially on Silver Lake.

Fishing
Anyone with the time, the inclination, and a line or trap may catch a fish or two for supper. Most of the major fishing industry lies at the lakes, with Shawburn at Tewellyn Lake, Myrkentown, and with sea fishes from Quagside sent down to Foggy Bottom to be pickled, packaged, and shipped. There are also various industrious individuals that fish all along the rivers and streams for rarer catches and roe. Foggy Bottom, at spring and at fall, becomes an attraction with the running of sturgeon and salmon, with workers migrating upriver in order to have a chance to make some quick coin.

*Myrkentown
*Foggy Bottom

Shipping and Travel
With Myrkenwood Province itself being rather back-woods and poor, many of it's roads are nothing more than dirt trails, the upkeep of it falling to undermanned woodsmen, local families, or local guard-posts. Most of the roads are deeply rutted, and hopelessly muddy for much of the year. Myrkenwood's rivers and lakes provide an easier, smoother, and quicker way of shipping large amounts of good and people throughout the province. Entire towns have sprung up around this concept, little more than buildings and docks lining the river. In rough spots, teams of oxen and horses are kept to help haul the barges through the rapids. Myrkentown is at the nexus of such travel, with many of the goods meant for here or for Amasynia.

*Ostmere, Erlkynwold, and Lindock lie along the West Mavoiir River, and are the major shipping towns from Myrkenwood into Amasynia. Erlkynwold, in particular, is a destination for many goods purchased or sold by the Elvenfolk, and is thus slightly bigger than her twins.
*Many more small settlements provide similar storage, hauling, and travel services up the Posehabnak.

The Badgers, as they are collectively called, are a semi-organized group of bandits, freedom-fighters, anarchists, and loyalists that are, in principle, sworn to take Derry back from Thessilane, and to drive the Occupiers and Intruders out of their homeland.
Most Badgers are unlearned peasantry, craftspeople, former militiamen, and - in some rare cases - former members of the Guard. The average age is quite young, with a bulk of the small forces consisting of those who had been too young to oppose Thessilane in the initial fighting. Mountain-and-Fjord folk tend to outweigh the ones from the more gentler, Southern plains of Derry, simply due to access and localized word-of-mouth, for the Badgers tend to operate in these areas rather than directly face the horses of Thessilane.

tactics and weaponry
The average Badger wears stolen books and coats stolen off Thessilane soldiery themselves, along with any weaponry picked from the battlefield. Due to the general, untrained nature of the rabble, they prefer guerrilla tactics, taking advantage of their knowledge of the mountain paths to stage accidents, skirmishes, and theft of Thessilane goods, and those manufactured by known sympathizers. With their small, mountain ponies, they can hit almost anywhere along the roads. They prefer bows, slings, and axes, being as a rule untrained in swordwork.

In the latter months of AR 209, there came to the Broken Dagger, and Myrkenwood in general, an emaciated madman who knew himself only as 'a Grand Catch'. Named 'Catch' from this by the locals, he was taken in by the kindness of Dulcie. His past nothing more than, to others and himself, ravings and seeming-riddles, fragments of memory that had become muddled in Catch's mind, no doubt the issue arising from the massive scar that neatly split his skull in two, from brow to nape, as if a great axe or sword had buried itself there in a battle long gone by. It became quickly apparent that, while inherently gentle and eager to please, the madman was prone to bouts of childish sulking and great violence, quickly compounded by the weight he put on while under Dulcie's care, the tall, thin man becoming a broad-chested creature of hard muscle.

For two years an uneasy limbo existed between the townspeople and the madman, where Catch struggled to be helpful and temper his irrational rages, and those who had come to know him - Glenn Burnie, in particular - did their best to keep him comfortable and under control. Catch's friendly and eager nature meant that he retained 'friends' from many sources, including werewolves, drow, dragons, and other desireables and undesireables, adding to the friction that surrounded him. From the first, his nature held many secrets he could not explain. A penchant for healing through, seemingly, magical means, a talent that Catch was urged to keep to himself by Elliot, and yet he used many times, such as freeing Suede Roschen's own mind from paranoia and madness. Catch insisted, too, that he could hear things that others could not, see and smell things they could not, and though he spoke in riddles without realizing, yet much of what he had claimed or said would come true. Instead if ingratiating himself, these abilities only seemed to set him further apart, leaving himself to Himself, and putting him further into the brooding morass that was his own, broken mind, infected with demons and frightening apparitions of his own creation.

At Glenn Burnie's urging, and with the aid of the healer Lamai, Catch began to find a peace he had not known before, able to quiet the ramblings in his brains. Such a peace, however, was short-lived, for with a semblance of sanity came terrifying dreams and visions, strange and awesome memories that could not possibly be true, and yet somehow were. At the Grand Ball, held in AR 211, Catch showed an ethereal, deadly creature hiding just under the skin, nearly murdering the shaman Thadius Dhrin, and placing Lamai into unconsciousness as his natural ability used her to, unknown to him, and uncontrolled, bring Dhrin back to life. Catch fled the Ball shortly after, evading capture and, in the end, punishment, for Glenn Burnie stepped in on his behalf, and Catch, frightened by what he had done, did his best to show that he was not murderous, or insane.

Catch's memories, however, were becoming more and more specific, more and more strange and uncontrolled and frightening. It was in the throes of one of these visions that he, unknowing, summoned a Presence into Silver Lake, a Thing that he called an Eye. When investigated, though catch struggled to keep it a secret, it revealed itself to be a strange, conical construct, three stones - obsidian, ruby, and alabaster - skillfully twined into one. It was at this time, as well, that Catch became increasingly friendly with Jirai and Matron Faeryl, and brought fresher sins to light, so that Glenn Burnie sought to educate and manipulate the addled man into fearing the Drow through use of a puppet-show. Moderately successful, Catch veered back onto a path of, if not sanity, then well-ordered and obedient servitude to the people and Tavern that has given him so much.

Unable to resist the forbidden Rhin, Catch, in his attempts to see her without Drache knowing, instead stole the child from her bed. He was found out when he came to the Broken Dagger to attempt in feeding the hungry child, and was taken to the Gaol by Agnie and Renea. The latter did her best to keep the madman comfortable, but unable to walk the forests and paths that he loved, the madman drew further and further inwards, down paths in his mind that he, under normal circumstances, did not go. It was in one of these paths, in sleeping, that Catch finally came into his Truth. With a Word that has no Sound, Catch destroyed the Gaol, and inadvertently caused the ground to shake so terribly that Myrkentown, and the surrounding areas, had come to flame and poison from the pressures released deep underground. Ignorant of what he had caused, Catch Changed, at once becoming more sane, and yet still slipping further into insanity.

Catch is, currently, at large, though Kacela and Jarod know how to find him.
Catch is a large man, standing at six and six inches of height, and weighting at roughly fourteen stone. His muscled build consists of broad shoulders, long arms and legs, and a long waist, giving him an odd, stretched appearance, as if he should have been a smaller man, but some great hand had changed it. His hands are large and, for the most part, clumsy, his fingers, to, stretched long. They alone out of his body contain scarring, silver remnants of strange, ugly, militaristic tattoos. While the finer aspects of most grooming evade him, he does take pains to keep himself clean, and other residents have, at one time or another, done their part to keep his near-white beard and hair trimmed, or else they grow into wild, tangled curls.

The most startling part of his appearance, the most sickening, as the great scar that neatly bisects his skull, beginning at the twisting of his brows and traveling a bare path to the very nape of his neck. It has not healed well, and so is a knotted and twisted thing, angry red even after all these years, and is left conspicuous because no hair will grow in the places it infests, or cover it. Catch attempts to keep it hidden under various hats, the hats themselves becoming something of an obsession of his.
