Fiendish taint, also known as demon taint, and any other number of names refers to the effect on the world that exposure to the otherworldly has. The world-bending, law-defying powers that these creatures wield so easily can have adverse effects upon all that come into contact with them. Usually, demons, ghosts, and any number of unnatral creatures are only on the Material plane for a relatively brief amount of time and thus, do not leave a lasting footprint upon the world. It is when particularly powerful, numerous, or just plain vile creatures not of this world remain for extended periods of time, or actually focus upon spreading taint, that it becomes a problem. The taint can manifest itself in many ways, but in particular, it is often the flora that is first affected. Frequent reports attribute some of the following characteristics as common in plantlife exposed to fiendish life.

* Unusual plant growth
* Plants exhibiting movement
* Foul odors coming from certain plants
* Fruits that bear the shape of living creatures, and which may indeed, spawn creatures.

In fact, most effects involve the plants gaining properties that are more similar to those of animals in one way or another than plants. However, effects can and will vary. Demons and their kind are unnatural by nature, and they will naturally defy categorization, as will their abilities and their effects on natural life.

In addition to the effect on plants, animals will become affected as the taint grows power powerful and spreads. Initially, animals may attempt to leave the immediate area. Those that don't leave, will generally become more belligerent, grow larger, and perhaps become smarter. It is also not uncommon for those animals that die in tainted areas to come back as undead.

In the final stages of a fiendish infection upon the land, the demonic ecosystem will attempt to wrest full control of the land. Full-fledged demons will attempt to occupy the land, humans may become possessed, or may experience hallucination, or mental illness. Reality will bend, and spaces may shrink, or grow. At the very last parts of an infection, many lands that are too far gone will suddenly disappear, never to be seen again.

These reasons are why demon hunters and exorcists tend to be fastidious in destroying demons, and cleaning areas that they have done battle in. Even a few hours of a demon's body sitting on the ground might cause a small amount of taint that has the chance to spread, if its quasi-biological filth is introduced into the plant or animal life of an area, and likewise, exposure to a demon's blood can cause all manners of horrid, contagious diseases.
A Brief Overview of the Childhood of Ignas Demonsbane
Though he was of noble birth, Ignas did not have a happy childhood. He was a shameful mistake, and his mother made sure that he was aware of that at every opportunity. He was not only a mistake, but he and his twin sister were destined to burn in a very real hell where they would be raped and abused by monsters and would wish for death to come but it wouldn't. This really didn't stop her from indoctrinating both twins in the family business, which was, ironically, demonslaying. Camille, the younger of the twins demonstrated a definite weakness of stomach and was promptly forgotten. However, young Ignas was a natural killer, taking quite easily to smothering baby demons and half-demons much like himself at the tender age of five. Eight years, a stepfather, and six half-siblings later saw Ignas rapidly reaching puberty(late for his kind, actually). This involved a lot of blonde hair turning rainbow colors, and going berserk. His mother did what any good parent would do. She attempted to slit his throat while he slept. For one reason or another, Ignas survived. His mother wasn't so fortunate as to avoid being torn limb from limb, screaming and alerting the whole household to what had happened. Ignas, being only half a fool at the time, did what anyone would do. He fled.

The Teenage Years
For the next four years, Ignas did a lot of running as far as he could, while his siblings went after him for revenge. It wasn't hard to track an out of control half-incubus teenager who had a tendency to shred the women he'd been with into small, bloody ribbons. Time and time again, he proved that he had the skill, and will to survive, no matter what. One by one, each of his half-siblings found death when they found him. Camille, on the other hand, who had gotten wrapped up in the whole revenge plot, had only gotten away with a severe beating(among other things), and was summarily sold off to slavers. It was at about this time that Ignas ran into a young woman named Angela. Poor, homeless, and quiet, she was everything that Ignas wasn't used to seeing. He was instantly smitten with her, and they were married within two days of knowing each other.

A Troubled Marriage
Ignas and Angela's marriage was doomed from its inception. Both were unable to control their urges to wander to other partners, and neither could control their jealousy as well. These problems might have eventually worked themselves out, if it wasn't for the fact that Ignas was still violent. For the next several years, their marriage became a violent, shaky thing. Still, Angela gave him triplets in their second year of marriage, two boys and a girl. And in their third, another girl. About a month after that, she left him.

The Past Fifteen Years
When Angela left, Ignas turned to religion. A small obsession of Angela's that had rubbed off on him. He hunted down demons and collected bounties, and amassed a small fortune, with which he would support his family. And despite his darker side, he found that he was a good enough father, if a bit unorthodox at times, and managed to hide his bestial mannerisms from them. Jecht, Adrian, Amanda, and Corazon were taught how to defend themselves, They were given books and lessons, and taught how to make a living in the world. This is the reason why Ignas hardly spends any time at home. He knows his children need to be independent, and on their own to flourish, and he knows that if he were around them, he'd try to run their lives, which he's come close to before.

Myrken Wood
For the past year or so now, Ignas has been frequenting the mud-hole, as he'd put it, known as Myrken Wood. There's a good number of demons to kill, plenty of people willing to trade items with him, and it is a source of food for him that hasn't completely grown wary of the fact that he's a psychotic brute. Times have been good, aside from the occasional stressful month, or nervous breakdown, or psychotic episode. Those are the norm, after all.

However, young Ignas was a natural killer, taking quite easily to smothering baby demons and halfdemons much like himself at the tender age of five.

April, 2006 -- Current Events

* Locals may have noticed some changes over at the Rememdium Edificium. Doctor D'Rael has left Myrken Wood to return to his homeland, and now the hospital has been left in the hands of his nervous, but dedicated workers: Janessa, Bryce, and Raziqa. -- Rattrap, 4/10/06

* Following the destabilization of Myrken Wood's government in the past half year, the Order of Straka has effectively disbanded with the resignation of Captain Thomas Daniels. Councilor Kerrak al'Nerun has been quick to pick up the pieces, introducing the Brotherhood of Janerio to take Straka's place, even taking in Straka guardfolk who still wish to serve. -- Rattrap, 4/10/06

* Notes and signs have been popping up all over Myrken Wood speaking out against Myrken Wood's political leaders as well as the current governmental situation, including the disbanding of the Order of Straka and the coming of the Brotherhood of Janerio; the notes have all been signed "People of Myrken Wood." -- Rattrap, 4/10/06

* There's been a series of pick-pocketings going on in broad daylight. People have had their purses snatched in the marketplace areas, yet still have not been able to pin down the culprit. So far, no one has been hurt nor any property damaged. -- Pipkin, 4/15/06

* The mutilated body of Governor Altias Bromn was found some time ago, the injuries so severe as to leave it almost unrecognisable. A new Governor has not been selected -- and with the loss of three Councilors, Myrken Wood is without substantial leadership. -- Carnath-Emory, 4/15/06

*Strange noises have been heard in one of the rooms of the Broken Dagger late at night, accompanied by the smell of mint lately. Muffled screams(female-sounding), sounds of impacts, and metal upon metal may occasionally sound out. Nothing ever too loud, though. -- Ignas Demonsbane, 4/19/06

March, 2006 -- Current Events

* The Broken Dagger has been host to an unseen creature for the past few months. Endless numbers of 'zombies' in the likeness of others have been attacking patrons and tavern staff recklessly and without any other obvious cause than to feed. While no apparent headway has been made combatting the creature, a group has come to learn a means of combatting It, lead by Arcadia Silverwind. 3/21/06 - Submitted by Rattrap

* Drow have appeared in Myrken Wood in great numbers in the recent months. They have attacked the town at large on multiple occasion, including a night raid and the poisoning of Myrken's children. They have been more frequently active in the Broken Dagger, where officials like Councilor Kerrak al'Nerun and Captain Thomas Daniels have tried to stop them, without success. Among the Drow's new faces is that of Myrken's long-thought-defeated villain, Audmathus. 3/21/06 - Submitted by Rattrap

* Myrken Wood's Council has been quiet recently, with only Councilors Kerrak al'Nerun and Giscard Guillaume active. Suede Roschen is evidentially in hiding after accusations made by Captain Thomas Daniels, Altias Bromn is believed to be dead (much more strongly, this time), and Aloisius Treadwell is rumored to have turned into King Richard Aengus, the Fairy King of New Hiberia. 3/21/06 - Submitted by Rattrap
