Joanna La Pâle, also known as Mistress Misery or, as she prefers to sometimes call herself, the Pirate Queen, is a curious sea nymph. For starters, she seems to prefer her more humane (non-poisonous) form, that of a tall blonde woman, five feet and ten inches in height, with pale lime-green skin. Long blond hair hangs down just beyond the small of her back, and also frames her face, bangs combed over to hide her right eyebrow and mesh with long stranges of shiny gold. As a nymph of the sea, Misery's skin is perfect, almost glowing, glossy and smooth. It is unmarred save for a curious dark red tattoo on her left arm, just below the shoulder, of a pair of pursed blood-red lips. Nails are well manicured, short, painted dark blue much like her favorite clothing. Her eyes, as the skull and crossbones eyepatch is purely for show, are a dark violet in color. Her nose is somewhat small, lips not too full nor too lacking, and eyebrows are thin but notable. Being a nymph, even in human form, Joanna is rather curvy and not afraid to show it off, despite being standoffish.

Joanna wears her colors. That is to say, Joanna's dress is actually also her way of striking her colors at sea, as it is a rather simple dark blue dress that exposes much of her cleavage. It is secured around her neck, where it is laced at the back to fasten it, and around her hips, where a rather heavy dark green belt sits. A rather large, quite unlady-like slit down her right leg exposes nearly her entire glossy leg, as well as more than a good portion of her hip and rump, the actual flag hanging over her left leg and covering it entirely, save in the wind. At sea, with sails high and the pirate ship in either full pursuit or at full sail in an attempt to escape pursuers, Joanna oft will stand at the wheel and turn into the wind, so that the huge skull and crossbones symbol on this portion of her dress flashes in the wind (and also becuase it obviously is a very striking pose and makes her enemies slightly more reluctant to fight.). Her hat is done in a tricorn style, with the forward point carefully curled instead of pointed so as to emphasize the skull and crossbones on the front, when worn. Hands and wrists are guarded by dark green supple leather gloves, with golden hoops around the wrists for jewelry. Boots vary from supple leather dark green knee-highs, to stilleto blue-slippers that fasten around her leg just above the ankle, depending on her mood.

Tied around Joanna's right leg is a single band of dark blue leather, used to support her weapon of choice, a most unlady-like bludgeon. Nothing short of a thick, adamantite metal club, it has a long blue handle, the club itself colored a dark green. Shading at the edge of the bludgeon suggests that it has been put to good, or bad depending on who you are, use. Joanna sometimes prefers to use a rapier in battle, but this depends on her choice of clothing, as she is sometimes known to go a little more... western in fashion, considering her attempts to adapt to the land and forest.

Joanna's natural, and rarely used form, is not much different from the human form in shape or size. However, as a nymph of the sea the Pirate Queen features darker skin, scales across her cheeks, chest, and rump, and thick, colorful fins along her forearms, outer thighs, and legs down to her ankles. This shimmering, glistening blue fins, particularly the ones on her arms, come together to again reveal the pirate symbol she so favors. In this form Joanna can not survive on land for more than a few minutes, and also prefers sharper weapons such as a rapier, since water softens the blow of her prefered weapon. Also notable is that in this form, many long, razor sharp smpines protrude from Joanna's hair. These spines, along with longer, sharper nails, are poisonous, with a toxin that causes paralysis. While the strong toxin would not kill a living being out of the water, as breathing, though extremely hard, IS possible to some minor extent, underwater, this poison is fatal, even to other sea creatures (since they must be able to move to utilize gills properly). Also, notably, Joanna features her own gills along her neck in this form.

Why Joanna is so far inland as to end up in Myrken Wood is anyone's guess, but judging by her standoffish and sometimes sullen attitude, it likely has to do with hiding from the law of the sea. As a daughter of the sea itself, Joanna believes in chaos (to an extent) and fully believes in the freedom or death theme, and thus, is very much at odds with certain laws and authority figures.
