==Description==

Doctor Aurielano can usually be found in a badly lit corner, either reading or scratching notes in the margins of one of a rotating stable of books. Unless engaged by another, he will likely remain there; he is not unfriendly, nor is he exactly sociable, but he tends to have a detached, courtly charm that some find attractive and others terrifically dull. Well-read, with a wide range of experience, he can chat quite fluently on a number of topics and is an attentive listener, but rarely discusses himself beyond whatever project immediately occupies him.

Like many a scholar, he is pale with slightly stooped shoulders. His hair is dark blond, neatly parted, and he wears a small, pointed, well-groomed beard. He appears to be in his early to mid-forties, but he wears that age very well, though not in a way that would draw much attention. In fact, many aspects of his appearance seem to be carefully calculated ''not'' to draw attention, from his manner to his dull, careworn, inexpensive clothing to his genial, watchful quietness. Maybe a little too calculated. Maybe a little too watchful.

In his mortal life, Silvio was a prosperous doctor, a husband, and a father, whose skill with medicine was not enough to spare either his family or the region surrounding them when it was ravaged by plague. In his grief, he became a virtual hermit, emerging nearly two years later with a renewed determination: no one should have to suffer the same sort of loss. He threw himself into his studies, looking for answers, coming up with only a single, obsessive conclusion: ''death is the only true virus.''

Before he could even begin to cope with the philosophical implications of curing it, he developed cancer.

Now on living on borrowed time, an old acquaintance made an offer: all the time he could ever want to continue to learn, to research, to save lives. The only cost: a trade-off. For the research to continue, someone would always have to die.

Silvio made the choice to live on as a vampire. For every one life he has taken, he has saved perhaps scores.

He considers this a perfectly reasonable exchange.

===The Broken Dagger===

Silvio arrived in the autumn of 216 and made the mistake of inquiring in Myrkentown for a cheap inn, preferably outside the main swell of town life. Someone recommended the Dagger as a joke. Silvio, having precious little in the way of a sense of humor, took them seriously and moved in upstairs. His baggage consisted of two boxes of books and a small, portable glass distillery, which he took care not to tell the management lest they considered him competition for the house brew. The books and the glassware themselves are probably priceless, but are so specialized that you'd be hard-pressed to pawn them, even in Myrken. Upon arrival, he promptly vanished for nearly five months, only returning in the late winter of 217.

One would think Myrken far too provincial for a man of his intellectual interests, but his choice of this town was not entirely coincidental. Rumors of Myrken's local fauna have spread far beyond its borders, and there is more than enough of scientific significance to keep him occupied between outbreaks.

==The Present==

The good doctor has no permanent practice, but tends to travel throughout the region to assist fellow physicians who may be overwhelmed by an unexpected run of illness, or to consult and diagnose on any particularly interesting, unusual cases. He may vanish on these consultations for as little as a few weeks to half a year. For a time he tended to move in loose circuits of Amasynia, usually with a centralized homebase to which he would infrequently return--more as a storage locker than a permanent residence. Now, it appears, he has moved southward, with Myrken and the Broken Dagger as his new base of operations (note: he does not actually perform operations in the Broken Dagger, although some nights, he could probably make a living on the barfights alone).
