Description
N`vek's body has been drastically altered to something near equally human and something akin to a cephalopod. Tall and lanky, The boy looks a bit stretched out. His limbs and torso seeming to be slightly more elongated than the average person, adding to the illusion that he is taller than he really is. His skin is fair with an orange cast to it with a dusting of white speckles and blue marks around his eyes. Although he can change his color at will. N`vek's flesh feels slippery and squishy to the touch, slightly clammy but far from slimy. His eyes are black and bulbous, head slightly larger than his proportions would make one think. He lacks nails and hair. The bottom of his feet and his palms are lined with minuscule suckers. And of course, the quartet of tentacles emerging from his back each one lined with two rows of suckers. It's hard to tell given his alien appearance but, N`vek looks around his midteens.
N`vek's usual attire consists of a simple shirt with the back cut out for his tentacles, pants, and a cloak draped over his shoulders to hide aformentioned tentacles. On days of street preformances, N`vek wears much more colorful clothing to blend in with his flesh's colorchanging abilties and a cape that mimics streamers to disguise his tentacles.
The boy's voice is calm and kind and has a pitch to it that makes it seem like he's constantly underwater or like he has a cold. N`vek's curse has made him very skittish around new faces until he warms up.
Background
Origins
N`vek was born in a small coastal village with the name Kevan, the boy always seemed to have an affinity for water, what some would go so far as to call a Gift. Even as a young boy, Kevan could always locate prime fishing and crabbing spots and never seemed to get lost amidst the cliffs and sands. Like most male children of the village, Kevan was expected to pull his own weight and was trained on how to fish not long after he was walking and talking. Kevan showed great skill at an almost supernatural level, the excitable and open little boy even claiming that the water was talking to him. Such claims were of course dismissed as a young boy's fantasies.
When Kevan was about six years old, his older brother, Adder visited. Eager to show him around to all his favorite fishing spots and how good he was, Kevan convinced Adder to head down to the coast with him. Somewhere along the walk Kevan got separated from his older brother. The boy was utterly confused. He was lost. How could this be? He never got lost. He knew these sands and cliffs like they were a friend. Kevan called and called for his brother, close to tears. He couldn't hear the ocean's voice. Everything was unfamiliar. Scared, Kevan started calling out for his brother and wandering further and further down the coast. Kevan soon came across a small cottage that he could not recall having ever come across before. Then the old woman appeared. Right away Kevan didn't like her. She felt wrong, as though the air around her was sour, and even the plants seemed to wither. She moved closer and took Kevan by the arm.
"I'll get you home, Dearie." She punctuated her sentence with a sharp squeeze to Kevan's arm and started pulling him along as she walked. "You really should not be out alone, boy. Especially around these parts. People have gone made and gotten lost in the dunes. They see things that aren't there."
"I'm fine!" Kevan insisted. "I know my way better than most men grown!" There was pride in the boy's voice.
"And how is that, Little Ser?" The old woman asked with a smile that looked far too large for her face and there was something wrong with how she said Little Ser.
"The water tells me." Kevan answered with the innocent bluntness only a six year old could muster.
"Then why were you wondering so aimlessly?" Her grip on Kevan's arm tightened and that smile looked all the more horrible.
"Because... it stopped... It's quiet." Realization hit the young boy hard. He was lost and nothing looked familiar because the ocean was silent. The sands were silent. The cliffs. Everything. But only the inside voices. The waves still crashed against the cliffs and shore, the wind still howled as it blew the dune grasses. "What did you do?"
"T'wasn't I who did anything, boy. T'was you." The old woman spat. "Innate Magic Users. Think they're better than normal folk. Quirk of birth, mistake of the gods. Cheating your way into skills Good people, Normal people take years to master. You're just a little abomination on the inside, Boy. And soon everyone will see and know the truth."
Kevan pulled away from her with a frightened scream and took off running, the boy didn't even care that in pulling away from the woman she'd left four long scratches down his arm. Kevan just continued to run until the surroundings were once again familiar and he spotted his brother. Kevan refused to talk about what had frightened him so badly, or discuss what had given him the ugly scratches that seeped a foul smelling ooze. Once cleaned and bandaged it healed without a trace. Even when pressed, Kevan continued to avoid talking about it. But, as the days passed the curse the old woman had placed on him began to make itself known.
It would have been bad enough that the waters didn't speak with him again, but then the changes started. He didn't even notice them at first, but the boy's skill in the water grew. He could swim faster and better than anyone else in the village, a week later the physical aspects took root. The scratched arm was first to transform. Kevan's fingers grew webbed and the flesh turned clammy. He went from being the village's pride to a freak. His former water talents had dried up and were replaced with his hideous transformation.
The Broken Dagger
Kevan's appearance only grew worse as the years went on and after mishearing a conversation between his parents, the boy took on a new name, N`vek, his old name spelled backwards, and ran away to seek out his brother in Myrkentown and perhaps a cure for his curse.
N`vek barely made it to Myrkentown and the Broken Dagger (Inn) before the snows of winter appeared. He was reunited with his brother, though Adder was still wary of his little brother's altered appearance. The Dragoness, Drache, was able to identify the curse and lift it from N`vek. The curse had latched onto and corrupted the boy's natural abilities. Drache was unable to restore the boy to a human appearance as, corrupted Gift or not, the squid-like appearance was now a part of the boy. He is no longer getting any worse and feels better than he has in ages. Only time will tell if his lost abilities return.
