- Garald Rose dies, victim of an illness that will soon come to be known as the Bloody Flux. His mother Dea travels to Myrkentown in search of word upon the disease, meeting other sufferers of it along the way.
- Klenn and Gertie Merston are murdered on their farmlands; their bodies discovered by Cap Coulter. Klenn's dead body had been set atop his mule, also dead; the two are held upright by a support of wooden poles and coarse rope, so that from a distance they appear almost to be alive. Gertie has been similarly erected in her own kitchen, a wooden bowl and stirring spoon in her dead hands. The word BELIEVE carved into her forehead.
