Genevieve Tolleson

"Well meaning and precocious, underestimated and determined, she sticks her neck out into the face of danger, red hair obscuring her vision but her heart guiding her way." -- Matt

Appearance

Not one to be considered perfect or lovely, Genny is plain. Pretty, perhaps, but plain. She is forgettable aside from the natural red color of her hair and her height. Standing, she is as tall if not taller than most Myrken men. Her hair is long, the ends of it clap the small of her back when it is worn down. She looks to be shy of twenty, younger when she smiles as the bridge of her nose and cheeks are awash with freckles. Barely noticeable are long, thin scars down either arm, the closure is clean as if the sharpest blade had made them. Freckles and scars aside, she is pale, extremely so, as if she barely leaves indoors, a reasonable assumption as her left-hand fingers are often stained with ink from prolonged periods of writing.

Genny’s clothes range to suit her purpose. Though she rarely has time for it of late, as a pie-maker she wears her old, stained dress, a faded blue, a foot too short, and patched in a dozen places from burns and wear. More often she wears a gray that sits perfectly between black and white. A personally symbolic dress, as if it is a uniform; the fabric is nice enough, utility the priority over fashion. It wears from collarbone to ankle, a bland front with a long line of at least a hundred buttons down the back and a black sash worn as a belt with delicate white embroidery on the tails. But of course, since her employment with the Inquisitory her personal clothes have steadily improved, no longer several years old and lacking propriety in length.

She had only several sets until her tutelage with Rhaena began, now she has an assortment of finer dresses and accessories, most which only come out on the rarest occasion. If at all.

Origin

What is known of Genny varies by person. Her employer,Glenn_Burnie, surely has a file the size of a small child, whereas some, like Agnieszka Kaczmarek need only know she is from Thessilane, to begrudge her. The only daughter of a prominent physician, she has several brothers. Of those that are known, there is Bradford, a doctor himself, working for Christoph and the Lady Lamai Carver in Thessilane. Then there is her twin brother, Tennant, relatively new to and now living Myrken, wanted by the Thessilane government – a criminal. The first she is fond of, the latter, she despises.

Arrival to Myrken Wood

Genny first arrived to Myrken Wood in the cool Summer of 207. Rather than seeking someone out or passing through, as the truly intelligent did, she immediately obtained a serving position at the Broken Dagger. It took only several hours of spilled drinks and ruined meals before she was placed in the kitchen as a cook. Her hard work and harsh words for anyone causing trouble made her fast friends with a maid, Dulcie, who eventually bought the place. Genny’s pies, on the other hand, which have been called legendary, are what endeared her to the gluttonous toymaker, Aloisius Treadwell. Meanwhile, it was her inability to avoid trouble that formed the unlikely friendship with the, then young, mapmaker, Glenn. It was his frustration, a gifted silver dagger, and a few hot words that might be considered one of several catalysts that prompted her to better herself.

It was not the repeated destruction of the bar, the terrifying incident with the blood conjurer, or even The Ashfiend that lead to Genny’s absence. It was a letter. The contents of the letter are not known by many, but what is known, is that it was Fall in the year 209 when she left for Thessilane.

Return to Myrken Wood

A great deal of time passed before her return, some warm day of May in 211. And with Giuseppe as her first encounter, she knew for as much as she had changed, so too had Myrken. On this auspicious day she managed not only to argue with Glenn, offend his hired hand, but also land a job tallying figures for the tax man, Treadwell.

Her work for him lasted scant weeks, before joining Glenn as a secretary just prior to his ascent to Governor. Since, Genny has worked as a Junior Inquisitor with Aleksei River at Glenn’s newly devised Inquisitory.

In between investigations, where she was paired with Altias Bromn, Cinnabar Calomel, and long hours buried in the Library, Genny had become good friends with Catch andZilliah, as well as Phlynn,Winifred Lawson, Lamai Carver, and Rhaena Olwak. While hardly enemies, she has been known to argue, extensively, with Elliot Brown and Agnie.

Madness

In an angry outburst, provoked by an argument they were having, Zilliah mentally shared Catch’s mind with Genny. Her mind, however, didn’t have the capacity to process what he shared. The traumatic event has since given her unrelenting nightmares prompting her long-time beau, James, one of Lamai Carver’s knights, to form a protective barrier around her mind. For many months she practiced alone, until she broke the barrier and was able to communicate with Zilliah, sharing words, mental landscapes, memories and emotions telepathically. With practice and Rhaena’s coaching, she has been able to hone her mental skills, though they are still rudimentary.

  • The Storyteller and The Mindwitch

The Storyteller herself was of little impact for the Junior Inquisitor who, since Aleksei’s leave earlier in the year, had taken on a larger role of research and clean-up on behalf of the Inquisitory. It wasn’t until Glenn’s mysterious disappearance and Rhaena’s sudden departure from sanity that Genny called on Cinnabar and became friends with Gloria to learn what had happened. After an exhaustive investigation into Stefan Berdini and a suspicious instruction from Rhaena’s appointed High Inquisitor,The Man in White, a book of names, listing all of the Swained was delivered to Ariane Carnath-Emory at Darkenhold. It was here that Genny reached out to Ariane’s mind and conveyed all of the information, including the discovery of The Golben as a prison, likely used by Rhaena to hold Glenn.

  • Investigating the Black Hour

As of 214, Glenn as returned, though unrest in Myrken is prevalent.
