Common Abbreviations
The basic means of communication in an established IRC session is a channel. You can see all the channels in a server using the command /list [#string] [-min #] [-max #] that lists all currently available channels, optionally filtering for parameters (#string for the entire or part of the name, with wildcards, and #min / #max for number of users in the channel).
Users can join to channels (using the command /join #channelname) and then send messages to it, which are then relayed to all other users in the same channel. Channels which are available across an entire IRC network are prepended with a '#', while those local to a server use '&'. Other (non-standard and less common) channel types include '+' channels—'modeless' channels without operators, and '!' channels, a form of timestamped channel on normally non-timestamped networks. Join us via internet relay chat (IRC) by using programs like mIRC or pIRCh. Both programs are available to download as shareware from the internet. Once you have your chat program installed, you can connect to us!
There are a number of working servers available that can connect you to StarChat. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with StarChat's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and administrative services.

How to Connect to #Broken_Dagger
When you are connected to a StarChat server, type /join #Broken_Dagger in the Status window and press 'Enter'. Remember that this is a role-playing channel and there will be players in the room who are writing through the eyes of their characters. This is not a regular chat room. To join our chat room type /join #BD_OOC and hit 'Enter.'

In Character
In Character (IC) is a roleplaying term, referring to the world of the characters rather than the world of the players. That is, a character talking to another character is an IC interaction, set within the IC world.
The #Broken_Dagger channel is strictly an IC-only channel.
Out of Character
Out of character (sometimes abbreviated to OOC) is a phrase used in roleplaying to differentiate between the person playing a character and the character itself. When the person is being him-or-herself, rather than playing their character, he or she is said to be "out of character". Plainly, OOC refers to things said by the author of the message, rather than by the character(s) that author is playing.
OOC is strictly forbidden in #Broken_Dagger. If you wish to communicate OOC, please go to Broken Dagger's OOC channel, #BD_OOC.
Bot
A bot is short for "robot" and is used to describe an automated, coded program.
In most cases on this website, "bot" will refer to a nickname on IRC that isn't a person, but just a bot, coded to respond to requests in channels and execute specific tasks and duties.
Currently, our Statsbot is active in the channel for keeping stats of recent roleplay, which which is accessible on the Broken Dagger Statistics portion of our main site.
Pritchard was a bot that served as the bartender in Broken Dagger. He had the ability to serve drinks to players that used predetermined codes. If a person typed one of these codes in-channel, it would trigger a response from the bot.
