Description

Reynard Volpone is a slim-built man graying of hair and approaching middle-age. He has a penchant for dressing well despite pursuing a career that encourages stealth, sneakiness, and less showmanship; regardless of how he clothes himself otherwise, however, there is always his usual reddish-brown, fox fur cloak. He has a longstanding connection to Aloisius Treadwell that moved quickly from a hired thief to being a man looking for revenge on his former, double-crossing employer.

Background

Origins

No details of Volpone's early life have emerged yet in the role play. At the time of his earliest noted appearance chronologically, in 187, he had just turned twenty, a fact speculated upon by members of the Westenford Ruling Council. Volpone is known to have at least a small background in theatre, as well, from a brief apprenticeship spent in his home village of Manello, Amasynia. His career as a traveling rogue for hire surfaced in 187 in Westenford when he took on the name of "The Fox," which he claims is the common translation of his family name from the tongue locally used in Manello, and proceeded to steal from high society in the coastal city. What most of the rich in town did not know is that he was being privately hired out by Aloisius Treadwell for a series of thefts from Treadwell's fellow council members. When these thefts unexpectedly turned to an accidental arson, Chief Magistrate Treadwell equally unexpectedly turned the tables, having The Fox arrested after claiming the stolen merchandise from him. This immediately created enmity between the two of them; Volpone cut open his employer's throat in revenge, serving only part of a day in jail before managing an escape while Doctor James Byron worked to resuscitate and heal the injured politician. Volpone was ultimately caught again at some point in early 188, serving two years of hard labor in the Westenford jail before managing another escape.

Volpone's criminal career from this point fades into and out of obscurity, with The Fox resurfacing from time to time to engage Treadwell again between other affairs. On November 2, 190 AR, the third anniversary of his attack on Treadwell, he slew Doctor Byron in a way identical to how he had planned to kill his former employer: by cutting the man's throat and leaving him to bleed to death. The Westenford authorities were never able to prove this, though, or to capture him on this particular charge. Between June 28 and July 4, 205, Volpone kidnapped his round, old target in an effort to humiliate him by bricking him into a cave with barely enough room to wriggle free if only he could slim down substantially. Of course, during Treadwell's incarceration, the old man did not have such liberty; The Fox stole substantial amounts of sweets and ale, keeping his captive gorged on them in an effort to break him. Rescue by a Alexander Kanashia saw The Fox attempting to kill Treadwell once more, adding another scar to match the first but not, in his haste, successfully finishing the job before having to flee. Other crimes surfaced when Volpone reappeared in 207 and 208, but these were more to Myrkentown in general. Eventually, he left Myrken behind and has not surfaced for some years.

The Broken Dagger

Having spent some time in Myrkentown, Volpone is certainly familiar with the inn; however, he was not known for spending any considerable amount of time in that particular facility.

The Present

Volpone has not appeared since 208. Whether he is alive or dead at the moment and where he is are all matters of debate.

Plots

Apart from the above mentioned crimes, Volpone has not been part of any major plots.
