Ok...at this point the old Founder would like to make a few comments, offer up a bit of information, and make a request of anyone and everyone...
First I'd like to speak to Dan's post and I will do this by saying that, yes, this is most definitely -everyone's- channel. However, a great many decisions are made--and in my opinion should be made--on the Ops board. The truth of the matter is that, if every bit of information that the ops make decisions about were put before everyone, nothing would ever get decided. Voting things approved or not approved is time-consuming enough as it is and the larger the committee the longer it takes. As a result, the Ops team does decide a great many things on its own and should continue to do so, if for no other reason but because it's tedious to do it any other way and it's really just not worth all of your time.
Now...to get to the juicy bit of information. If you want to know the REAL reason that Rance and Liz stepped down, it's because -I- asked them to and they honored that request. I'll get into why I made that request below.
The heart of the matter is that I am responsible for a lot of the issues that have been cropping up around here lately. When a manager is leaving a company and a replacement is hired, usually there is a certain amount of time where the two people have some overlap so that the replacement can be trained so that when the former manager leaves, the ship can continue to sail without too many problems. I did not do that for James and the rest of the Ops team. I didn't debrief. I didn't advise. I left. And that wasn't fair. I apologize for that wholeheartedly.
As a result of that lack of guidance, James--being a human being--made a couple decisions that didn't sit well with certain ops in the beginning. That, coupled with a lot of real world distractions, led to a bit of frustration for some ops. As a result of that--and some other things along the way I'm sure--the ops team lost its cohesion, its ability to operate as a team, and its faith in one another.
Because of this, both Wendy and I were contacted by Ops and non-Ops alike to help sort things out because at the end of the day all everyone wants is for this place to be an amazing place to create stories. James wants that. Rance wants that. Liz wants that. I want that. Everyone wants that! So the goal is clear--make this place rule. Unfortunately, as the team was, it was becoming exceedingly difficult to do that. So, I asked Rance and Liz to walk away.
Were they the problem? No. Were they the reason that the ops team was having a harder time functioning? Again, not at all. The truth is that no one person or group of persons is to blame. The fact of the matter was that certain situations occurred that brought us to this current situation and, as a result of that, something had to give. So, just like when there are differences of opinion in the Oval Office, the cabinet members politely resign and the President remains. The situation is the same in this instance.
Could these old ops return? Yes! I hope that they will one day because they are amazing people! They love this channel as much as the rest of us do. They love our players. They create amazing plots. They have only helped this channel become what it is and I know they will continue to help it. I can't thank them enough for their service here. I know that James appreciates their hard work...he's told me as much! I just think that there's some value in taking a little break so that everyone has a chance to cool down, let bygones be bygones and move on from here.
So, right now, we're going to press the reset button on the Ops team, get back to the fundamentals and make sure that we're all on the same page in order to insure that this channel stays the best RP channel of all time. I am certain that James and the rest of the ops team are ready for the challenge. Wendy and I are ready to help out and make sure that we pass on all of our experiences and "best practices" so that we can try to do everything in our power to avoid situations like these from coming to be in the future.
I said in the beginning that I was going to make a request. My request is this...please be patient. I know that some of you are unhappy. I know that some of you are reading this post and don't have a clue what the hell this is all about. The rest might not care a tick! All I can request is that whichever group you are in, just be a little patient with us as we try a few new things. But more importantly than anything else...know and understand that we really are all united in a single, solitary goal; to make the Dagger kick butt.
If you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or anything else, please don't hesitate to talk to any operator from the Founder on down. I will also be available to anyone who wishes to message me on here, on the wiki, or on IRC (when I am online). We are here for you!
Thanks.
