This is not Baie

Ignas doesn't even know what the hell that is! Which is why his response is harsh and quick, mid-slicing. Ignas takes it. It will be a painful, grievous wound, to say the least. The blade is large. "Good! Now help us....*urk*", there goes the blade, "Kill it!", there is a blade inside him, and an extended arm. Here is his chance, since she has decided to leave herself so open for him. His hands reach for the falchion arm, and attempt to grip tightly, spurs of bone peeking through his flesh, ready to extend in a curved manner once he's gotten his hands upon her. One arm. One arm is all he needs to make this his game.

There is shouting outside that Ignas assumes comes from enemies. Even if they give credentials, there's no way to confirm them, or to even confirm that they weren't in on this AND with Janerio. This is going to be one confusing battle.

Yes, the tracker had been scouted by the barmaid. His plan had been guessed and battle cry reacted to before it had even left his throat. But he too could foresee intended actions based on body movements. So, as Athena’s arm cocked back and sprung forward in effort to throw the dagger, the huntsman could already tell that the blade was to be thrown at him.

And, if Athena’s goal was the make the man falter, rather than kill him, she succeeded. Acteon twisted his body and turned his head, dropping his right ear to his shoulder, evading the incoming blade. The spiraling edge flipped and tumbled through the air of the darkened corridor until it made it contact with Acteon. It did not hit his neck, as he had moved out of the path of the blade, but it connected with his shoulder and the leather-shrouded plates of his brigandine that protected it. It bounced off, falling to the dirt of the cavern's floor.

Although Acteon was off-balance a bit as a result, his attack continued. Had his weight remained centered over his feet the force behind his blow would have been staggering, but his need to dodge the thrown dagger had diminished the power significantly.

That said; the kukri itself helped to compensate the loss of force. After all, the kinked blade design of a kukri is made to amplify and focus the power of a strike to a central point on its edge. It is this design that allows kukris to be used for everything from slashing throats to cutting wood like an axe. Also, the short length of the kukri made the weapon more manageable and less cumbersome than a long sword and less likely to get tangled in the woman's coat.

So, although, the coat hindered the onslaught of the kukri, the sharpened edge still caught and shred the heavy garment without too much struggle. But, by the time the kukri had cleared its obstacles, its trajectory had been deflected. The hunter’s original intent was to have the blade come down upon the woman’s skull. Instead, the combination of his off-balance attack and Athena’s coat had sent the blade arcing toward one of her arms that had held up her coat instead. His attack, which originally might have cut the arm clean off, was diminished to one that would probably not even get to her bone or it might simply flay the skin from her arm, depending on the angle at which it hit. If it hit at all.

Acteon had heard Carnath-Emory’s voice as he attacked the barmaid, but he could do little to stop it mid-strike. But her words had resonated in his head somewhere. For some reason, the fact that Acteon was still alive at all made him realize that Carnath-Emory was most likely correct. Acteon had heard little about this beast called The Baie, but from what he had heard, it dealt death quickly and no one had ever mentioned weapons when speaking of the monster. No, Carnath-Emory was probably right; this woman was not the Baie.

Acteon stepped back a bit, hesitating, looking rapidly at Carnath-Emory for the faintest fraction of a second, but maintaining his focus on Athena. After all, the woman probably still had fight in her yet...and rightfully so.

Why?

For the first time, Sventon laughed; it was a gasping, dry laugh that made him forget to stress his bonds.

Why worship the Baie?

"We do what we must to live. There is no choice," he finally replied. "You will say that there is always a choice, but the only other choice is to die. You have made your choice, and eventually you and yours will die for it. Worship Him, or die sooner than you would like. If you do not understand, then you belong in a house for the mad. If you do not Believe, you will not live long. Your questions will be meaningless."

Any signs of his laughter was gone by now; there was some, distinct discomfort in the architecture of his posture, in the lines of his face. Cinnabar had kept him from dying at the hands of that madwoman, but he was obviously not right in the head, and it was only a matter of time.

The fight beyond the dais at the tunnel came to a culmination of shouts, and Sventon narrowed his eyes. Cinnabar may have gotten the distinct impression that Sventon was trying to shrink behind him. In these white robes, he was as compelling as an archer's target.

A horror of fire swelled behind Jons, choking the air of the chamber where he was trapped inside, trying to force his way out; the door was heavy and the bench was heavy, but wood gave way to force when enough blows were applied.

Jons, when he looked through the hole, could see the cultists fleeing into the darkness of the hall; although he could not see their faces when they glanced back at his chilling hollar, there was fear in them. They parted ways, ducking into other side-rooms along the hall when they saw two more coming in the distance, smoke crawling along the roof of the tunnel from the splintered door.

Rhaena and Agnie might not have seen them, but they could surely see and hear the ruckus at the end of the hall, where Jons fought his way free of the flaming trap.

As ever, the cultist's explanation prompts a grin from the apprentice, though this one lacks in mirth.

"I fear no monsters. I worship no monsters. This has been so for as long as I can recall, and yet I am not dead. I do not fear your Baie, I will not worship him, and I certainly Believe that I will not die by him."

He watches the fight, though he continues to speak quietly to Sventon.

"I don't fully understand what I'm interfering with, that's true enough. I don't have enough information. But that's why I have you."

Grey eyes narrow as he regards the new arrivals, bows at the ready, commands shouted to those gathered within the chamber. Well, looks like whatever it is that's happening over there is going to settle down soon, one way or another.

"Look at it this way: you fled when you were meant to fight. You failed your god, and for that you'll probably be made to pay. Or your family will, if you hide. Whatever happens, the worship option is probably not going to do you or yours any good. Where you go from here is up to you."

Postby Quincy » Tue Mar 20, 2007 4:28 am

She could hear the sound of boots against cave-stone, reporting everyone's progress, as her bristling sword carved through the air toward Athena. With a compact strength that came rare to slight, fine-boned girls, and with building anger, she struck at her, only to have blades scissor swiftly against her own, metal shrieking, diverting her attack. She ducked her chin down and the heel of the palm cuffed the metal of her helm, and the girl wrenched her blade from the motley fray of weapons with a small growl. Just as she arched onto the balls of her feet, ready to lunge at that single, spied point of vulnerability - blade glittering - there was a cry.

"Quincy, this is not Baie!"

So distinct is the voice, that her hesitation was only, partly present due to her adrenaline; her blade wavered, and then lowered at a more defensive level. She stepped back with narrowed eyes, not looking away from Athena.

"Why didn't you say!" She hissed at Athena, voice slighly muffled between her gasped breaths against the mouthpiece. "You could 'ave stopped this by talking."

She was almost tempted to follow Ignas' advice, if only because of these remnants of anger. There'd clearly been some confusion, but she didn't much care. The girl began to lower her blade further, waiting to see if everyone else did the same.

"Ignas, this ain't a - Ignas, what are you doing?!" She was not going to stand around waiting for everyone to kill each other over a misunderstanding; her brow muddled with furious lines of worry, and she rushed behind Ignas, trying to pull him off of her! "Come on!"

"Rautha, hold!"

As if Ariane were in any way suited to command, as if she were in any way experienced in such a thing! But what she does have is a decade's experience of armies and their large-lunged sergeants, and it's put to excellent use in this horribly desperate moment.

"There is no enemy!" she shouts at the tangle directly in front of her, and for one very terrible second the confusion of it -- of four bodies, ten arms, more weapons than a swordswoman likes to reckon with -- hesitates her. It is a heartbeat's pause, and her sister leads her from it, for where Quincy leads, Ariane almost always follows -- and in this case, towards the only reasonable option. Acteon has withdrawn, after all, and this leaves them Ignas and Athena to tackle: as Quincy moves to drag Demonsbane from the other woman, so Ariane slips neatly forward...

To occupy the space between them.

For her narrow body is smothered within the scratched contours of old plate armour; for there's a cultist's dagger in one hand, and a schiavona in the other, the both of them held in opposing angles at her body's defense. Oh, she likely can't defeat six-armed Athena, but that's not her purpose here. The trick is just to ward away the worst of what comes, until Ignas and Quincy are clear, and reason once again prevails.

"Where I go from here is up to me,' Sventon sardonically echoed him, and then asked, already knowing it was not what he meant: "Does that mean I can leave now?"

Even if he wanted to leave, his safest path would be in the company of Cinnabar. There was no telling how many more of these barbaric heretics were running around the caves, slicing at everything in a robe. Narrow eyes watched the confusion beyond the dais, and the cries were a comfort to him - not because he enjoyed shouts of urgency, but because of the specific nature of them. It was not the Baie. Of course it was not the Baie.

"Do not test Him. Be glad that you have a chance to change your ways, before it is too late," the young man murmured, sounding more subdued and frustrated than ever.

The hallway may be too small for rapier; but it's what she has, and a dagger in her other hand, and the tandem moves Ariane and the Brotherhood have taught her. She advances; will you hear, Jons, the bark of her command --

-- "Rhaena! Now!"

The koltists may hear it, too, but for them it might be a little too late to do anything about it.

Now!

As Agnie barked her command to Rhaena, there was a cohesive instant of movement as the two cultists lunged from the side-doors with their daggers, at the Brotherhood girl - intending to take her down together, before she could help Jons beat down the door at the far end of the hall. They came at her in the cramped space from both sides.

Altias had remained back from the conflict. He could not say how he knew, but he was certain the bizarre multi-limbed woman was not the Baie. Still the shamshir was in his hand, as he surveyed the situation. The tracker and Ignas seemed in bad shape for the time being, Ignas more so than Acteon.

Ariane seemed to know the lay of this, better than most, and her voice rose above the conflict urging them to hold. It was a wise choice. Still, Jons and the younger women had gone missing, deeper into the caves. Suddenly, there was a sense of dread within Altias...that perhaps they were in far greater danger than those who had remained here to fight a battle which never needed to happen.

Slowly he turned, making his way back toward the hallways that branched off from the main hall, voices and the rich scent of burning wood drifted toward him, from the direction of the living quarters. It was there he would make his way...to see what Hel had come to join them there.

Wrong, in all the right ways

"Now!"

The girl's reaction was instantaneous - hadn't she been waiting for just that? Veiled brow furrowed in concentration, she attempted to force feelings upon the minds of the two cultists lunging at Agnie - wrenching illness and pain.

The cultist's question prompts a sidelong glance somewhere between amusement and irritation from the apprentice, which quickly shifts into curiosity.

"What would you do if I said yes?"

He nods towards the far side of the chamber.

"Assuming you got past my associates who, as if I need remind you, probably bear you a significant grudge backed up by a certain amount of cold steel. Also assuming you get past those serious-looking fellows who I presume represent the forces of Law and Order without getting shot, stabbed or arrested and thrown into prison for being part of a murderous - not to mention very illegal - cult. Also bearing in mind that one rather vengeful lady with a sword knows your name and trade, and almost certainly has the incentive to investigate further."

Cinnabar turns to regard the man more fully, giving him the better portion of his attention now that the fight in the main cavern seems to have mostly quieted.

"What would you do?"

And then a wry grin at the man's last words.

"You know, I could say the exact same thing to you."

A split-second's thought --

(can't take 'em both out, trust Rhae to slow 'em at least, a little too small and fast for my fucking rapier, maybe I can use the small o' this corridor to my advantage)

-- and she's moving. Her left hand flashes out with the dagger towards the cultist on that side, making a lunge for his chest; she's hoping she's faster, that the fact that the cultist is lunging might work for her benefit. The other cultist? If her dagger finds a home, it'll be leverage for a nasty kick in the second's direction.

"I do not know what I would do, but it would be better than this madness - this rabble," Sventon bleakly replied, having no idea what he would do if he was released at this point. "You could get me out of this if you wanted to. You could take us away from the rest of them. I could - "

He struggled to think of something, of anything.

"I could pay you! Yes, I could pay you," Sventon urgently decided. "You were able to protect me from one woman, but what about the rest of them? Look at them! They are ready to kill. I know I'm not worth that much trouble to you. I'm a stranger. Maybe I could make it worth your while. I don't have much, but I could find a way. If we could only turn back down this tunnel, there's another way out! You saw it. You saw it!"

Urgency sounded a lot like pleading now, hushed and forceful - as though his voice was not made for speaking loudly; the lines of the young man's face showed his stress as he thought of precisely what they were going to do to him.

"I can not die in this place! I can not! Do you understand? There is something very important - " Carnath-Emory's shout cut him short, and the young man bit the inside of his cheek, controlling himself before he spoke again with far more evenness.

"I can not show you what He gives to us if I am not alive," he whispered, nearly closing his eyes.

Throbbing force slammed into two, cultist skulls and there were two, distinct shouts of agony that simultaneously identified the interference of concentrated Rhaena. Agnie slashed through white cloth and flesh, and the cultist that she struck with her blade staggered backward, clutching his arm; the one that she kicked landed on his back, holding his head. He lofted his boot and slammed the door shut with it, bracing it closed.

The first, bleeding cultist tried to resist doubling over, and lamely threw himself out into the hall again- wildly slashing at the girl. She could see eyes blazing with accusation from the mouth of white cloth.

Holy shit, I'm not dead --

"Didn't have t' be this way," says Agnie, who wears her father's One Faith prayer beads on her wrist, who wears a black feather at her belt; oh, she could see those eyes, and perhaps they're the eyes of someone she knows -- but she has Rhaena to consider, and she must live to gather the rest of the members of this thrice-damned, ill-gotten foray and retreat --

As the cultist launched forward, Agnie would swing around and make a try with her dagger, once again, for the belly; 'fight dirty, if you want to survive,' Kerrak had said.

This time, she also had Rhaena to consider.

She hadn't forgotten.
