A couple things... first to address the currency thing...

There is a Currency section on the website that addresses the value of money. Give it a gander.

Second, I am totally open to changing the map and whatnot. I am just going to throw a couple things out there...

There has been a lot of reference over the years to the rest of Trae Kelsa. The mapped area has always been what was dubbed the Amasynian Plateau of Trae Kelsa. It been implied that there is a decent amount of land south of the mapped area. In fact, there was a time when we started to really try to delve into the greater workings of that area and how the Amasynian Plateau related to the rest of Trae Kelsa. We talked about there being a Trae Kelsan crown and that each of these areas that we know, Heath, Myrken Wood, Derry, etc. are basically like Counties (ie. England's Suffolk, Norfolk, Dorset) or Member States (ie. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) within the Trae Kelsan kingdom. Therefore those areas can still be Baronies, Duchies, or merely territories that are represented by councils and parliamentary representatives to the Royal Court somewhere to the south.

It doesn't discount the turf wars and things that have happened in the past IC, because there was certainly plenty of that between Scottish Clans and other nobility in the UK without much royal interruption.

I just wanted to throw out past thoughts so that there is another bit of something to mull around during the brainstorming sessions.

That's actually awesome that you bring that up, Brian, because that helps reform the thoughts of the map. I only assumed that the Xanth Grange, Heath, and Thessilane were the bottom of the so-thought continent.

I always have liked the idea of not showing ALL of the land -- it gives more credence to the IC thought of, "Well, I come from a land called ______ and it's very far off..."

With that in mind, that the Amasynian plateau is only the northernmost part of the continent/world, we can change that and throw in a descending chunk of land to the south, to lead to the thought that there's plenty more to be had. ^ ^

Currency

Yes, I've seen that page...many, many times. My nit-pick is that everything is rather generalized. As I said, it has prices for purchasing a bed and sheets, for your house...but it doesn't say how much it is to rent a room at an Inn. Also, it has "Labor: 480 a year, max"... er, that doesn't give much info. A farmer's probably not going to make as much as a blacksmith... and a blacksmith probably won't make as much as an Undertaker (funerals were expensive back then too, plus you had to pay a yearly fee for the grave, or they could dig up the body and toss it to garbage collectors).
I'm not saying you need to put every single different occupation, but some estimages of a few levels of labor would be nice.
And that's what I should emphasize...just be nice. If it's too much work, ignore my nit-picking! ;)

Already extended the map a little to leve it open for imagination, but some Ideas as names perhaps for the top two would be nice :)
Even 2 more going south of the mainland to the bottom of the map.
Well toss in your idea's.

Something else has just come to mind. What we need is to update Pritchard. Not change him, heavens no, just give him a few more responses or something, re-descride his actions and whatnot. Add stuff to the menu perhaps. I don't know if that would take to much work on not, because I've never messed with a bot, but that's just another idea for the Dagger.

Special Events?

Postby Anron » Wed Feb 02, 2005 4:06 pm

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but I certainly found there to be more purpose in playing, thus more people playing, when there was that one time that we had the special event commending some people of Myrken. Maybe... A... damn, it's hard to think of these. But still, maybe special events besides battles and the sort... Moving on...

I agree with that some Pritchard updates wouldn't hurt, either. I still haven't figured out tipping. That's mainly due to a lack of intelligence, and I'm willing to change.
Which also makes me wonder what we as the players can do to improve the Dagger... I can't think of anything, but I'm sure that one of you intelligent posters got something.

Two things re. the map:

Firstly, could we finally have clearly-labelled landmarks? The Broken Dagger itself, for instance, and the town, etc -- marked so that we can actually see what part of the map they're on? Also, please, please some sense of scale, or -- preferably -- travel time. Those would be an immense, practical help. *g*

As for Naria and the Strait, I adore the descriptions...but is it possible to add a summary similar to the ones already listed for Derry, etc, just for sake of things like climate and trade, and so on? That's another big help for folks wanting to incorporate the areas in their roleplay.

I'm glad you hit up on that -- definitely, the landmarks will be there, as well as a bit more detailed descriptions as to towns and everything. Katalin has been nice enough to make a second, massive version of the map so that way we can cut out the individual countries and do detailed landscapes and landmarks of them! :) So onec those are done, we can all decide what we want in them!

And don't worry, Naria and the Strait will have those kind've descriptions, too. :) Those were just off-the-cuff things. Or, rather, Naria will -- the Strait is more or less all mysterious and unknown, so it probably won't have much.

In response to Anron's comment, I've put up a poll elsewhere on the forums about which days of the week work best for folks concerning said events and plots 'n stuff. If you could all take a look, it'd help me and whoever else might try running events in the future out quite a bit, for scheduling and whatnot.

Once I get enough info gathered, I'll be trying to through together a social town event, being O'Cynen's funeral. Naturally, it wouldn't be complete without some sort of dubious plot, which you'll all learn about once I get there...

Motivation

Postby Sir_Gladius » Mon Feb 07, 2005 6:05 pm

You know..starting RP is a good thing, but when people just randomly insult others in the OOC Channel, it doesn't exactly motivate them to put in the time and energy and effort into starting RP and trying to rally up people to join in.

Some people in BD may not be concerned about attaining new players, but eventually new people, how they are treated, and rewarding them for starting RP that contributes to the overall health of the channel WILL be an issue.

Just 2 cents from a guy with a "reputation". ;)

I'm sorry, but if you want to "save" the Dagger, it's that simple: play in it. Take some character, or make some character, who you find just plain fun to play. Play with whoever's around. Don't try to schedule big events or work out long stories. Just play. Interact. Get the ball rolling.

Indeed... sometimes I don't even have anyone else to RP with and I'll just go at it. This usually draws people into the game - so stop saying "I wanna RP, but no one is playing... :' (" and just go RP more than likely, someone will join in.

Perhaps if we have a good bad guy - again this is just an idea. But, like a really mean officer or some such that is a bad guy that can't be killed or anything because he's (or she's) really a 'good guy.'? hah.

Anyway - I know this is on another post regarding the actual layout. It would be really nice to see how Myrken Town is structured... For example, where is the Toy shop, what kind of 'streets' are there - are there homes, room to build a new shop if IC Rhea wants to buy one... ^^;

To me, it seems that alot of the RP'ers in BD are getting caught up and distracted by other things and don't have the time. There's no real solution to this, because sometimes, and I say it with the most reluctance, the real world can be important. I think after time people will begin to wander back. It's just a depression going on in RP right now. More scripted events, more clarity and openness to the newer people, is what I would suggest.

On the other hand, our stats page shows yesterday to have been the busiest day of the month -- and heck, perhaps several other months as well... *laughs*

All is not lost! And trouble, I believe, is beginning to brew on the not-so-distant horizon...
