Description

Alcara is the youngest of the Bloodletters, only twenty-tree years of age. She is something of a free spirit and is notably unconcerned with what her comrades want and expect of her, showing obedience to Crucia alone. Out of all the Bloodletters, she is the most outwardly optimistic and playful, baring her fangs only when it becomes obvious that she can't charm her way to the desired outcome.

Physically, she is lithe and agile like an animal, displaying catlike grace and incredible dexterity. She incorporates acrobatics and the graceful movements of a dancer into her fighting style, her weapon of choice being a twelve-foot whip with a blade at the tip that she wields to great affect, allowing her both reach and a means with which to disorient her target, as the whip snakes and snaps through the air around her. She prioritizes keeping some small amount of distance between herself and foes, allowing her to strike at them from several yards away while they are unable to land a blow in return.

Alcara's Manifestation is referred to as Affection, the ability to change the world around her in various ways, the effects proportionate to the amount of energy that she expends. Unlike the powers utilized by her comrades, intense concentration is not required to Manifest in this way, but expending too much energy at once can physically and mentally damage Alcara, often requiring time to recuperate from the magical feedback.

As an innate ability that has yet to be defined or explained, any magic or power other than her own does not have any effect on Alcara. Because of this, Crucia is unable to Bind her in the same way as the other Bloodletters, and Alcara's body rejects all forms of healing magic.

Background

Origins

Alcara is the only Bloodletter is not originally from Mixalydia, having been born into a nomadic caravan in the neighboring desert nation of Jernich. At a young age, brigands razed the camp and slaughtered its inhabitants, save for Alcara, who was safely hidden away by her mother. She was discovered hours later by Crucia, whom the girl mistook for a brigand and nearly killed, and Selwyn during one of their earliest assignments. Seeing something of herself in the girl, Crucia promised to keep the girl from harm in an extremely rare display of genuine affection.

Alcara returned to Mixalydia with Crucia and was informally adopted by the woman, living under the same roof and breaking bread with her. Crucia watched the girl closesly, eventually learning that Alcara was completely unaffected by magic, including her ability to Bind others. After much deliberation and despite opposition from all sides, including the king himself (whose doubts she managed to assuage with the promise of solid results), Crucia made the decision to induct Alcara into the Bloodletters, teaching her to wield weapons and hone her powers.

Though she proved to be one of the most competent agents the Bloodletters had to offer, and easily the most dangerous in combat, not all were happy with Crucia's decision, considering her to be a wild card that could wreak havoc should she decide to bite the hand that fed her. Among them was Michta Vess, the king's personal advisor, who insisted that the girl be dealt with. The king eventually agreed and an attempt on her life was made that backfired and ended with the king's own death. Alcara fled the kingdom by ship but was unable to outrun the vessels in pursuit of her own. Her ship was burned, and in a spur-of-the-moment decision, she Affected herself to prevent the fire from killing her, and was thrown from the ship in the process.

Clinging weakly to debris from the destroyed ship, she eventually drifted onto the northern shore of New Dauntless and was found on the beach by a band of traveling entertainers. They replaced her uniform with mundane clothing and nursed her back to health. Having drawn far too heavily upon her powers upon the ship, Alcara had managed to damage her mind in the process, affecting her memory prior to awakening. As a result, she adopted a new persona in order to adjust to her immediate circumstances, calling herself the "Vixen".

The Broken Dagger

Alcara's memory abruptly returned during a confrontation with Crucia and Kess in Myrkenwood, shortly after the Bloodletters arrived in town and on the same night that Bern Clydell and Egris Verreaux were attacked by Bale and Molleine. She subsequently returned to Crucia's side without hesitation.
