The Book of Names is a mythical book readable only by the One God, in which are inscribed the names of the saints and those who will join the throngs of the righteous in the glories of heaven after their deaths.

For followers of the One True Faith, each sin committed, especially against a saint or one of the righteous, contributes to the erasure of their name from the Book; each act of repentance causes it to be returned.

The only truly unforgivable sin is suicide; those followers who take their own lives are damned to oblivion, and there is nothing the prayers of the faithful can do to save them. At the court of the Pontifex Elian I, heavy arguments currently take place among the leading theologians of the time regarding whether euthanasia, murder, and honor-killing should also be included on the list of the unforgiveable erasures, as followers have been known to take advantage of the ability to repent after committing such crimes to keep loved ones from the fate offered a suicide.
