Description

Physical

Karie is a tall, slender elf with quite a bit of muscle in her legs and upper torso/arms. From head down, she possesses smooth and silken silver hair which are streaked with faint but noticeable blode strands. Her features are sharp with high cheekbones and sculpted neck, her eyes are a deep cerulean which emit a soft glow - often flickering with an electric pulse occasionally. She's not particularly curvy, because physical attritubutes weren't something her people focused on. She has a basic military-like build, where her breasts are a blatant indication of her gender. However, she only has a slight swell of her hips which are stocky and wide. A result of her having children in the past. Her legs are toned, thick about the thighs and calves.

Posture/Demeanor/Attitude

She seems to have a very dominant, but lax stance. Her features are often filled with mirth or snark, supported by smiles. smirks and grins. When approaching a friend, she is quick to warm and offer physical contact. Strangers are not often seen as negative, but she's hesitant to open up, preferring to watch and gauge who/what they are. With enemies, she doesn't dawdle or hesitate to make her emotions/thoughts know. Overall, she is a friendly person but doesn't hold back on opinions or actions depending on who she's faced with. She has, in some instances, chosen to be a hero in situations that she feels she can aid. After the amount activity and action in her past, she has embraced this.

Background

Origins

Karie originates from a place set apart from Myrken and the world it sits in, Elverquiste. A place of magic and a race of elves thought to be created by forces beyond the scope of normal means.

Karie was born to one of three 'major' families in Elverquiste - the last bastion of her people. It's not certain where they originated from as a whole, due to a lack of lore on the past. But rumors and legends speak of origins beyond the stars. With nothing to prove such things, it has become more of stories read to children at night.

The Sandars family lived in the richer quadrant of Elverquiste, along with the two other main families - The Baeltes and the Kalriese.

One fact about Elverquiste is that it has two moons in the sky. One, called the Runic Moon, determines the 'Sphere' a child will be given. The second moon, called the Prophet's Moon, determines the 'Path'. Every hundred years, the Runic Moon goes dark and the Prophet's Moon is whole. This is called the Path of the Savior and spells disaster for the Celestial Elves and the birth of a Savior (called The Lunar Prophet). Only females have ever been born on this occurrence, which has prompted a whole series of rituals to provide the child what she needs to protect the Celestial Elven people.

In-Depth

Karie was born on The Prophet's Moon, which classified her as the Lunar Prophet. Her birth was welcomed with a birthright sword, named Shimano and, when she was of age, she began her Path of the Elementalist - which is only given to those born at this time. As she aged, she left home to travel to the 'temples' for each element. Depending on her level and strength of faith, she would be given a Soul Element prior to her pilgrimage (which involved acquiring all of her powers). During the Soul Element ritual, she was bestowed with the power of Storm; a rare element that personifies chaos and unpredictability.

During her pilgrimage, back in Elverquiste, a rise in violence was occurring. Her parents, Miriam and Dalanar Sandars, were having arguments over Karie's 'big purpose'. Dalanar was known for his inability to adhere to the rituals and rites of the Celestial Elves. He, and his questionable behavior, could be traced to his own disillusioned life amidst a group of fellow naysayers who wanted to rid of all this magic worship and move on to something more solid. Miriam, Karie's mother, was having a harder time reining in his behavior which resulted in arguments. It wasn't long before Dalanar left Miriam and disappeared.

Karie was gone for a very, very long time. But since time works differently in Elverquiste, she returned to the Sandars manor when she was only in her late teens. Her mother explained what had happened, leaving Karie with a sense of forboding. Shortly after Miriam and Karie settled into a normal life, on a night of relative calm, Dalanar struck with a large group of his 'followers'. They began ransacking houses, killing men and women, totally disrupting the runes that helped protect the village from outside influences (since the residents of Elverquist believed that outside things could interrupt and disrupt the daily safety). The fires and smell of burning flesh woke Miriam who was confronted with the images of horror outside the windows of the manor. She rushed to get Karie up and then moved swiftly to get her into the cellar. Dalanar did not know Karie had returned, which worked in Miriam's favor.

When Dalanar's men were attacking a majority of Elverquiste's residents, Dalanar would approach the Sandars manor - calling Miriam's name. Frightened, Miriam didn't know what she should do. Standing the main room of the house, she waited with kept breath. When the door slammed open, Dalanar faced her. He stepped, quickly, to Miriam and struck her. Demanding that she tell him where Karie was, Miriam just told him that she was still on her pilgrimage. At first Dalanar wasn't convinced, beating Miriam - which Karie could hear from the depths of the cellar. It wasn't long before Dalanar shoved Miriam aside to scour the Manor in depth - all the while Miriam was laying on the floor, broken and beaten.

It seemed a lifetime for Karie in the cellar, listening to the crashes and bangs. The cellar wasn't known by Dalanar, installed *after* he had left Miriam, so its existence was masked behind the stairs through the use of a complicated system of magical means. Basically, only Miriam and Karie could access it. It's not clear if Miriam was preparing for something of this nature or if she was going to use it for something else. Whatever it was, it helped save Karie. But not Miriam...

When Karie emerged from the cellar, the entrance to the cellar was untouched but the house around it was destroyed - razed to the ground completely. She attempted to find her mother, but only found the necklace her mother wore. There were no bones or any indication that her mother had died in the house. The city around her, too, was completely wrecked - bones and ash lay everywhere. The remaining skeletons of some houses were still smouldering and collapsing in on themselves.

Elverquiste had fallen.

The Broken Dagger

It's not entirely clear how Karie had gotten to the Myrken Wood or the Broken Dagger tavern. Her origins, beyond that of Elverquiste, are shrouded in mystery. The only thing she ever mentions is where she was born. The Myrken Wood is where she sprang up at many, many years ago. She met a slew of characters (not many I remember), endured a great deal many large events as well as something that altered her as a person. The city (and tavern) have become her new home and she really doesn't bring up much about her past, preferring to let it lie versus bringing up the pain of her entire life between the fall of Elverquiste and how she came here.

She does, however, mention that she had been married a few times and had some children who she has no contact with. She's certain they don't even know where she is, having been in the custody of the other half with every relationship she's had. Or, they've grown up completely, moved on to their own lives - seperate from her her own.

The Present

Karie is a ghost in the sense that she comes and goes without any reason or rhyme. If she has a job, she doesn't talk about it and it's unclear what it is she is ever doing. Prone to popping up unannounced, she's taken to just chatting with whoever might be around. For now, Karie is just an aged legend of the area, having lived a very very long time and still providing protection to the people of the Dagger and the city.

Factoids

• Karie loves children. Due to her "empty nest" syndrome, she has always felt a need to protect them. Even if they are ungrateful or find her interference obnoxious. Karie has thrown herself in front of plenty of violence toward children before in the past.

• As with the "Glurge Addict" Trope, Karie loves sweets. Typically, she enjoys tea with pastries the most. Sometimes, the quickest way to get her agreeable is to placate her with sweets. It doesn't always work, though.

• Fighting is something Karie avoids if it's senseless, but sometimes her desire to do the right thing often lands her in hot water. Threatening her or provoking her is also not a wise idea. Karie tries to keep out of trouble, but it often sucks her in.

• Due to the fact she's been alive for an extended period of time, thanks to possessing a phylactery - Karie has developed some mental illnesses. She also suffers from memory loss and insomnia. Night terrors as well have become a part of her life. The most startling mental illness is that she has a form of magical multiple personality disorder where, if she taps into the Chaos elemental, she becomes a chaotic evil version of herself capable of extremely destructive behavior. Thankfully, she avoids that particular element unless it's absolutely necessary.

• Her longevity, as mentioned previously, is thanks to a phylactery. Not unlike what liches use, she has bound her soul to an object. It has been mentioned in the past, but there is no telling what object she's currently bound to. But, considering her the fact that she can't be too far apart from it, it has to be in the vicinity or in town. Maybe even in the Dagger.

• As far weaknesses go, Karie is not that well-versed in melee combat. Her phylactery, if discovered, can be used to control her and if it is destroyed she will cease to exist.

• Karie has a hard time letting go of the past. It's bitten her in the ass multiple times in the past, resulting in periods of depression and withdrawal. However, lately, she's learning to push passed the past and get on with her life.
