Description
Bern prefers not to get involved with other peoples' problems unless there's something in it for her. She is, however, fiercely loyal to the people she is contracted with, putting herself between them and danger without hesitation.
Her typical outfit is made up of padded leather armor with bared shoulders and a cutoff at the midriff. She wears forest green breeches tucked into knee-high boots with soles modified to muffle footsteps. A lengthy green scarf is wound about her neck, both ends hanging down her back to the waist. Fingerless leather gloves reach her elbows. She wears a cloak the color of damp ashes when it is necessary to remain inconspicuous.
She is agile and dexterous, armed with several throwing knives hidden on her person as well as two wickedly sharp daggers at her hips. She can strike accurately from a distance of fifteen feet, and will attempt to keep that much room between herself and her foe for as long as possible. If she is unable to incapacitate them with her throwing knives, she will quickly close the distance and do what she can to finish them off with her daggers.
She can come across as somewhat businesslike, with a no-nonsense undercurrent in everything she says. She remains extremely focused when working, and almost distracted when not.
She does not openly talk about her home or her family, and will react coldly when pressed for details about either, feigning disinterest in the subject.
Background
Origins
Rumors circulate among the bounty hunters of Myrkentown that Bern was a noble by marriage before she began her work as a guardian for hire. Some say that she killed her husband and is hiding from the authorities of her homeland, while others suggest that he is not only alive and well, but out for her blood. She is not forthcoming about the validity of these statements, and will usually stalk off if within earshot of someone discussing them.
The Broken Dagger
Bern arrived in Myrken Wood to work as a bodyguard and a bounty hunter in 211 AR. She frequents both the Floating Dragon and the Broken Dagger.
The Present
Bern can usually be found at the Floating Dragon inn when she has downtime, playing a hand of cards. She prefers to conduct all business with clients at the Broken Dagger, stating that she never works where she relaxes. She will, however, accommodate clients who insist on meeting at a specific location.
Offering her services as a bodyguard to those who can afford her, Bern draws a clear and distinct line between being a guardian and a sell sword.
Her fee is day-to-day, paid upfront. Clients can extend the contract, but she rarely takes on jobs lasting more than a month or one that requires her to travel. She does, however, make exceptions depending on what the client is willing to pay.
When not in the employ of another, Bern works as a bounty hunter, picking off marks in the surrounding area as a way to support herself as well as a way to keep her knives sharp.
