T.S. Brummell is the personal bodyguard to and friend of Lord Hawkesbury. He is also a well-renowned pugilist, famous in Southern Trae Kelsa for his bare-knuckle bouts with "Huge" Hugh Doiseau and many other notable fighters of the roped ring.

Brummell the Bear Killer

Brummell first garnered attention as a young man, when he wandered the Western Province with a group of festival workers. The group consisted of minstrels, fire-eaters, jugglers, acrobats, and the like, who traveled from town to town, providing entertainment during festivals or large market days.

Brummell was a boxer and wrestler, who immediately gained public acclaim with his act, which involved wrestling a large brown bear. The bear (named Baron Bearon) was caged prior to the fight and trained to look extremely ferocious. Brummell the Bear Killer, as he was known then, drew audiences that traveled for days to see him fight the seemingly blood-thirsty bear.

The act finally came to an end when a spectator mistakenly came to Brummell's aid when it looked like the Bear Killer was going to be bested by the bear during their well-choreographed wrestling match. The man, fearing Brummell was going to die at the claws of Baron Bearon, slashed the neck of the brown bear. The bear lashed out at the man in retaliation, but the bear's wound spilled so much blood so quickly that the animal could do nothing to save itself. So distraught was Brummell by the attack on his bear, he ended up nearly beating the man to death.

After the death of Baron Bearon, Brummell's act changed. He continued to travel Trae Kelsa, but instead of fighting a bear, he challenged any man in attendance to fight him. Men were encouraged to fight by the promise of a large purse for the man able to beat Brummell. Men often lined up to take turns fighting the bare-knuckle legend.

He only lost once during those years with the traveling performers. He lost to "Huge" Hugh Doiseau. This started a pugilistic rivalry never before experienced in Trae Kelsa.

Brummell vs. Doiseau

On June 13, A.R.185, in the market town of Khemi in Xanth Grange, T.S. Brummell challenged the crowd, as he had many times before. It did not take long before he had a long line of would-be opponents. Brummell had bested 14 men in a row before "Huge" Hugh Doiseau reached the front of the line.

Doiseau stood a good foot taller than Brummell, but the undefeated bare-knuckle fighter did not seem daunted. It is said that the fight lasted over three hours and ended when Brummell was so tired that he could no longer hold up his arms enough to defend himself properly. So exhausted was Brummell that when he was knocked down, he just couldn't physically get up. This was their first fight, but it would not be their last.

News spread so quickly from town to town that Brummell and Doiseau became a hot topic of conversation at the tables of the Trae Kelsan aristocracy. So fascinated by these men were the Trae Kelsan nobles that Pyotr Chladni, 13th Duke of Ubonridge sent messengers to find Brummell and Doiseau and bring them to the Trae Kelsan capital city of Razasan. This led to the first officially sanctioned boxing match in the history of Trae Kelsa. It also led to the establishment of the Chladnian rules, the first set of rules applied to organized fighting in Trae Kelsa.
