"I could not imagine where we would be without the laboring class; they are a hard-working sort, condemned to bloody their hands and blister their feet with toils that scarcely pay their way. And yet, when the work has been done, the shops are bolted and the bazaar is closed, they return to their secret lives in their secret homes, with secret children and secret loves, counting the hours until they can once again be themselves -- the laboring class."
- Sol Paulis, Jerno politician, philosopher, poet, historian

Description

It would be easy to lose Gloria Wynsee in a crowd of Myrken commoners. Round about the edges, plump in hips, cheeks, and hands, she has the appearance of a well-fed plainsgirl, her conservative dresses, long sleeves, and bonnets dirty with dust and old stains. Her skin is often gritty with grime, and her dark hair, instead of spilling free, is regularly bound into a number of fist-sized knots.

A girl of middle teenaged years, she wields the exacting vocabulary of a foreigner still not yet used to the Standard tongue. What she lacks in personal organization and patience, she makes up for in conviction. In conversation, she speaks with honesty and abruptness, often not fully recognizing the consequence of such freed speech. She is intensely fond of poetry and prose, but prefers Jernoan literature over the bland styles of Myrken's few authors.

Background

Origins

The seamstress is no native of Myrkentown. She was born and raised in the deserts of Jernoah, a distant country known for its exports of bonework, dried smoking-root, glassware, and sculpture. She clings to customs of her homeland: she is a devoted follower of the Nameless, a pantheon of Jernoan deities; water is rarely wasted on baths or clothes-washing; she openly supports authoritative, even tyrannical governmental structures, like other Jernos, who believe stringent politics and laws have significantly reduced thievery, murder, and other crimes.

In Jernoah, she was an active member of the jerethedral choir and a student among many under the harsh tutelage of various Mother Sempstresses. She left Jernoah in 212 AR, but often avoids the matter in conversation, usually citing dislike for her homeland as the sole reason for her departure.

The Broken Dagger

After a two-month voyage in the bowels of a ship charted for the Red Caps, she disembarked in the port town of Foggy Bottom and relied on the kindness of traders and traveling merchants to lead her to Myrken Wood. There, she intended to meet with the one Professor de Lanz, a scholar of Jernoan language and history whose name was all she could utter in the Standard tongue when she arrived. Subsequently, she took up residence in Myrkentown and forged a number of friendships with those who called the Broken Dagger and its surroundings their home.

The Present

Gloria has been employed in a number of occupations and distractions since her arrival. She worked as a seamstress for various employers until she lost her hand to a wolf's jaws. Currently, she spends her time working in a minor position at the Myrkentown Inquisitory, filing and organizing volumes and paperwork as necessary. She has gained proficiency in the Standard tongue and spends her free time -- which has increased since discovering her pregnancy -- in the company of her friends.
